Love is a Battlefield

I’m linking this post to Sunday Post, Stacking the Shelves, and It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

This week was very low-key for me. The Mister was gone this week for work, so I decided to take that opportunity to just sit at the computer and get as much work done as possible. I still have a ton of more blog posts to type up, but I got a solid chunk done over the last few days. Which is huge for me since I am usually typing up posts the day before.

While I was successful in getting some work done, the books I read left me feeling ho-hum. There were just a lot of mediocre reads with characters that seemed to lack a brain. I even had a DNF this week, which is sad since I thought I would love that story. Actually, I thought I was going to love ALL of the books I read. Which was probably why I fell into a reading slump. It’s just so rough to be letdown over and over by books that you are so sure of.

New arrivals

Special thanks goes out to Berkley for approving my review request for The Kiss Quotient. So many of you guys have been raving about this story and I’m really excited to have received a review copy! Also, thank you, Rachel A. Marks for approving my review request to read Twisted in You. I love the cover for this and it sounds like a good story with a hottie Irishman. I’ve read so many mixed things about The Cruel Prince and my number was finally called at the library. I’ve been waiting months on the waiting list for this book. I’m really interested to see what side of the fence I fall on with this story. Unraveled randomly popped up in my mailbox on Monday. I read the first two books in the trilogy a few years back and enjoyed them. So, I was excited to be able to read the conclusion to the story. Plus, that cover is simply gorgeous! Thank you, Entangled Teen for the copy! Last but not least, I snagged a copy of Beauty and the Beast while it was free. I’m a sucker for scarred military men who find their HEA.

Read last week

The Last King was an enjoyable read and I liked the suspense aspect it had going on. My review for it will actually be up tomorrow. Unraveled was an enjoyable story, but I did have some issues with it. Primarily the fact that I knew who the bad guy was the moment they appear in this story, and not to mention that the characters knew there was a mole and proceeded to discuss missions out in the open. I just felt like the characters lacked a bit of intelligence. Enough was another mediocre read for me. The heroine was a bit too emotional for me. She was one of those characters that instead of talking something out, would run off into danger because she misunderstood something or interpreted it completely wrong. Beauty and the Beast was a DNF for me this week. I was really excited to read this one, but I couldn’t even make it a quarter of the way through the story before throwing in the towel. Filthy English was another one that I thought I was going to love, but just didn’t do it for me. The heroine drove me nuts with her insecurities and the way she always talked crap about the Hero without actually having the facts.

Currently reading

Race the Darkness is a book that I’ve had for a few years. When I saw that it was free online, it made me want to dust off my copy and read it. Since I’ve been reading more lighter romances, I feel like I need a good, dark, suspenseful romance with some paranormal aspects laced within. Hopefully this book does the trick and pulls me out of my book slump.

  1. Hope you get out of the reading slump and your next reads are better, The Kiss Quotient looks cute. Your bookish insta pics are so nice! Happy weekend.

  2. Boo for the mediocre reading week. πŸ™
Fingers crossed this week is better! I added The Cruel Prince to my TBR this week having finally bought it while it was only Β£1.49 on amazon uk. Very excited to read it and see what side of the like/dislike fence I land on. πŸ™‚

  3. I blog ahead at least 30 days. When I first started out I would type up something that day and post it. Too many days I just had nothing. lol It’s so much less stressful to have a few blog posts ready to go.

    • That is awesome! I need to get in the habit of doing that. I just have a hard time sitting down for so long, typing everything out. I end up getting sidetracked with something else. LoL

This week was horrible for me. Sorry the books you were reading where ho-hum it’s been like that for me too. So I know that feeling. I would love to get my hands on The Cruel Prince. Love the instagram pictures. Have a good week.

  5. OMGosh, I just got out of a book slump, so I totally know how you feel! I hate when I’m really looking forward to a book and it just doesn’t work out. And there’s always a tiny piece of you wondering if your own mood had anything to do with it. I hope you have a much better week, you look like you got some super cute books!

    • Yes! Exactly! I always wonder, “Is it just me?” I’m really hoping to pull myself out of the funk. I had planned to get some reading done on Sunday but had to run a bunch of errands, and before I knew it the day had gotten away from me.

  6. Looks like you had a decent haul of books this past week. I love that cover for Unraveled, sorry to hear that it let you down a little. Have a wonderful week.

  7. ouch I hate not finishing books thought I have read a few that I should have just DNF. I end up coming back to them after like a year XD – thought I did DNF one last year. No time for mediocre reads when you can be reading something that makes you happy. Oh hope you enjoy The Cruel Prince.

    • That’s kind of how I feel about it all. If I’m still enjoying parts of the story, I will push through. However, if I’m having a rough go of it all the way around, I throw in the towel and move on.

The title for Filthy English has me very intrigued. πŸ˜‰

    Did you like that one?

    Thanks for visiting Shell’s Stories!

    • It was a good story. The heroine bothered me a bit because she held onto something the Hero did/didn’t do three years ago in college when they first met. So, the fact that she holds it over his head the whole time was a bit annoying, but otherwise I thought it was a good story.

Good for you for getting ahead with the blog with you had some time. I am always doing posts the night before and it does get old. Sorry to hear that your week of reading wasn’t better for you. I have The Kiss Quotient coming to me from Bookish First and am really looking forward to it. Have a great week!

    • That’s awesome! I have tried using Bookish First but I guess I don’t respond quickly enough or something because I’ve never lucked out with going that route. I hope you enjoy it. Everyone has been raving about it, so I’m excited to jump into the story.

  10. I hope you like Race the Darkness! I enjoyed it! Very different! And I am loving the Kiss Quotient! Have a great week!

    • I’m hoping that the change in story and genre may help shake me out of this funk. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. That gives me hope that it will work. πŸ˜€

Your edition of Outlander is beautiful.

We all have those weeks when we just can’t find a decent read that calls out to us somehow. I hate when that happens so I feel for you. Thanks a lot for visiting my blog!! Have a nice week!

    • It definitely sucks when you get stuck in a reading slump. They are so hard to break out of. I figure if I can’t get back on track soon, I will just reread one of my favorite books. That usually always helps.

  12. I’m really excited to read The Cruel Prince– I mean next year when my hold finally comes in at the library πŸ˜‰
DNFs are always so hard because it can feel like a failure (to me anyways) to give up on a book even if I know it’s just not for me.

    • I know! HaHaHA It seemed like it took forever for my number to be called. Then that entire time it was on hold at the library for pick-up, my branch had to close down for maintenance. I was so worried they were going to come back and recycle out all the past-due holds. LoL I hounded them every day, hoping I would catch them before they put my book back in the system.

  13. I hope you will get out of the reading slump soon – I hate it when that happens or when I expect to love a book but it ends up being mediocre (or worse). Enjoy your week!

  14. Oh yes have those book slumps before. It sucks. Hope you get out of yours. I just pick up Abbie Roads for free. Thanks love.

  15. Oh that’s disappointing when you hit a string of books like that. Yay on the blog posts at least. Hope your next reads turn out to be stronger ones.

    • I don’t know what my problem was. I just couldn’t seem to find a book that grabbed my attention. Thankfully I read a couple good books this past week and I think I’m back on track.

  16. Oh, I love it when my husband is working (he works out of state) because it gives me a chance to catch up with my reading or blog posts!

I am sort of having a mediocre reading week… I did finish a 5-star read last Saturday, but that’s it!

  17. Sorry to hear about the reading slump. Those are no fun πŸ™

  18. I can feel you about the book slumps. Normally, I read more than 3 books a week, but now, I’m down to only 1 or sometimes none at all. It’s crazy because I think I’m into my 5th book slump this year. It sucks! Hopefully this week would be nicer for the both of us Kristin, and btw, enjoy your new books πŸ™‚

    • 5th?! Oh my goodness, Vanessa. I think this is only my second but it’s still more than I want. I hope you start finding books that interest you soon. πŸ™‚

  19. Loving your insta pics πŸ™‚ really too bad the reading was meh. There will be weeks like that, I guess!

    • Thank you! <3 It's been pretty slow doing Instagram this month. I just haven't fully been in the mood for it or when I am, it's really cloudy out.

  20. Aaaah a new Abbie Roads fan? I loved her RTD book and all the others. Hope you enjoy them as well.
    Best wishes

I hope you have found some better books! I recently read a couple that left me feeling meh. I found myself asking, “That’s it?” Hopefully my next book will be a good one. My year started off so well . . . The Kiss Quotient sounds like it will be good. And I’ve been hearing good things about The Cruel Prince. I haven’t read anything by Holly Black. Yet. I hope you have a great weekend!

    • I feel like I’m in the same boat. My reading year was going great until this last month. Now I’m struggling to find books that hold my interest. I hope your reading picks up. Thanks for stopping by. πŸ™‚
