It’s all been leading to this.

Jolie Benoit has become a skilled agent of the Underlight, relying on her savvy to complete assignments while Sergeant Wesley Haukon was out of commission. But an unexpected clue to the Order of Ananke’s diabolical scheme rattles Jolie, and she turns to Hauk for comfort.

It’s been years since Hauk took comfort from the touch of another person, though his love for Jolie is deep and powerful. Uncomfortable in his skin, scarred by a terrible fire, he is unable to give in to the pleasures that Jolie so desperately wants to grant him.

Meanwhile, the Order is lurking in the shadows—and when they strike, the blow is swift and terrible. Hauk and Jolie scramble to fight for their community, but with the future of the Underlight threatened, no one is safe. And Hauk will never be the same…

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the entire story but I so don’t want it to end! I’ve fallen in love with Hauk and Jolie and I’m just not ready to let them go.

In this installment of the series, people from the Underlight are being injected with this potion that will make them not only attack their friends and family but give up the Underlights location to the Order. When Jolie’s father offers to have a plane sent to her to pick her and whoever else up for a birthday getaway, she’s clued in that the Order have planned something huge, which is why her father is trying to get her out of there. Her and Hauk only have a little time left to try and figure out a way to save the Underlight before Jolie’s birthday.

Jolie and Hauk are hotter than ever in this story. They finally start their relationship. With all of the scarring and deformities that Hauk has, he’s still uncomfortable when it comes to being naked. They have some rocky patches while they try to find a way to be together without putting Hauk into a panic attack but boy do they manage.

“Calmer now, he could admit a big part of his problem was that if he had made a checklist of everything he could possibly want in a woman, she’d fulfill every one. He tapped his metal leg against the metal of the railing. Being so incomplete in front of that perfection was hard.”

Not only was the romance amazing but the suspense and fighting was top notch. Jax doesn’t take the easy route and give these two characters a tough fight and then a HEA either. Nope she goes above and beyond the HEA and gives us a heartbreaking moment that will leave you asking “What just happened?” She definitely did not disappoint on this one.

There could’ve been no better ending for Hauk and Jolie. Their story was mesmerizing, their personal growth was amazing and I’m really sad to have it all end.

“Hauk should not think lustful thoughts at a funeral; it was generally considered the wrong frame of mind for the occasion, But memories of the last sixteen hours kept intruding on his consciousness, swinging his mood from anger to joy at inappropriate moments.”

2 Thoughts on “Review: How Beauty Loved the Beast by Jax Garren

  1. I loved this book too and didn’t want it to end! You really nailed why this story (and the series) is so awesome. Great review!

  2. Aww, that’s so wonderful when a series finishes just the way you want it to (even if you’re not quite emotionally ready for the end)! So many series grind to an awkward halt or are pretty much awful before the author decides to end it, so one that comes to a satisfying end is worth celebrating! Being so sad to say goodbye is testament to the book’s quality!
