His powers–inhuman
His passion–beyond immortal
All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she’ll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member–a man trapped in a hell of his own.
Neither can resist the instant hunger that calms their torments…and ignites an irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction–and a soul-shattering test of love….

The Lords of the Underworld are a group of warriors who stole Pandora’s box and unleashed the demons that were housed inside. They thought to teach the Gods a lesson but instead wound up housing the demons in themselves. Maddox is the keeper of Violence and every night he is stabbed to death 6 times and taken to hell for killing Pandora. Not only that but as keeper of Violence his demon is always looking for a fight.

Ashlyn can hear voices, but not just voices from people around her but residue voices from the past. It has made her life a nightmare, she can’t concentrate on anything and she’s always fighting to block everything out. So when she hears that there is a group of men who might be able to help her, she takes off to find them. But when she gets there, she finds an enraged man covered in blood. As terrifies as she is, she realizes that the voices are gone, and she will do anything to learn how he did that so that she can lead a normal life.

This was a great introduction to the story. The whole aspect of the immortal demons was pretty interesting. Each guy has a different demon housed in them and they each suffer with it in a different way. Not only does this story follow Ashlyn and Maddox but you also get side stories of the other men in the house as well. The weaving of the different characters definitely brings the secondary characters to the front and gives them the spotlight.

“I tried to tell you. You said you didn’t care, remember?”
A muscle ticked below his eye. “You should have told me anyway.”
“While you had barbells within your reach? Please. I’m Disease, not Stupid.”

3 Thoughts on “Review: The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter

  1. I know Gena’s name but I haven’t read anything by her. I really enjoyed your review and this sounds like it would make a nice break from all the YA I read

  2. Loved Maddox! I have only read the first in this series, but I plan on continuing if I ever get the time. I liked getting to know the different characters too.

  3. I love the LotU series, Kristin! I hope you’ll enjoy the following books as well.
I also would like to thank you for stopping by my blog. 🙂
