Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn’t crack…until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn’t explain why he always finds her no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past-and her destiny.

1thoughtsMackenzie has been on the run for about a month from a man who will do anything to get and make her his. When she first met him, she thought he was charming but then he started talking about destiny and their babies and not soon after Mackenzie found herself running through five states to escape him. No matter how fast she runs and how well she hides, he always seems to find her in the end. Her latest stop in New Orleans has proven to be no different than the last except that she has stumbled across a supernatural community who is willing to lay their lives on the line to save her.

Mackenzie is a really skittish person. She isn’t quick to trust people and it takes her a little bit of time to trust Jackson when he tries to help her. However, she soon learns that the man chasing her, Marcus, wasn’t crazy when he talked about other beings. Not only is Jackson someone who can cast spells and make himself invisible, but apparently she can shape shift into a cougar. Which just so happens to be really rare.

This is the first book by Moira’s that I’ve read and I must say that I really enjoyed it. You don’t only have shape-shifters but seers and wizards as well. There are a lot of secondary characters in this story and sometimes that can throw me off, but they play such a huge roll in the story, that I never got confused with who was who. There was quite a bit of action in this story and a lot of sexual frustration at the beginning when Mackenzie goes into, what can only be described as, heat when the spell binding her cougar side starts to unravel. I found myself flipping through pages just to find out how it all ends and even though this book is rather large… I read it within a day.

He is the keeper of Doubt and his entire world’s about to be rocked.

Bound by the demon of Doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers. So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern…until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more.

Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she’d fall for a kind human who wouldn’t rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora’s box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love…

1thoughts
Sabin, the keeper of the demon Doubt comes across an underground hunter lair that contains a bunch of otherworldly females. Sabin is immediately drawn to one female in particular. She helps them release the females but when he’s about to release her one of the hunters that was kept alive for interrogation purposes pleads that they leave her locked up because of how dangerous she is. Of course Sabin doesn’t listen to the hunter and releases Gwen. She doesn’t harm Sabin and the Lords however, the same cannot be said for the hunter. Sabin decides to take her back with him and the Lords to their fortress.

Gwen is a Harpy. Her name is actually Gwen the Timid for a reason. Unlike her sisters who can kill someone without second thought, Gwen has a more gentled nature. Now that doesn’t mean that if you back her into a corner that her Harpy won’t come out and play, but she tries really hard to keep the Harpy locked down. She has comes to find that Sabin is the only person who has ever been able to calm her Harpy and talk her down from blood lust.

This is another great addition to the LOTU series. We get farther into the storyline of finding the artifacts. There is a run in with the villain Galen, keeper of the demon Hope. And much more progress to be made under the Lords reach their goal.

1favequote
“Maybe Sabin’s a portal to heaven like Danika. Maybe the Harpy saw a few angels while receiving mouth-to-mouth.”

Down, Boy

Anna Moder has just witnessed a shooting, seen her car pulverized, and rescued a wounded stranger only to discover he’s really a werewolf. And by her recent standards, things are actually looking up. Lycanthropes don’t faze Anna. Doctoring a wolf pack outside Grundy, Alaska, is the closest thing to home life she’s known in years. But hitching a ride to Anchorage with long-absent pack member Caleb Graham that’s a risk. Part of her itches to whack his nose with a newspaper. The rest is trying unsuccessfully to keep her own paws off every delicious inch of him.

The problem is, Caleb employs his lupine tracking abilities as a notquite-legal bounty hunter, and Anna is suspicious of both him and his profession. On the run from her past, with old problems closing in, she’d like to stay far, far away from anybody with connections to the law. Caleb, however, seems determined to keep her close. Are his intentions noble, or is he working a more predatory angle?

Anna’s been dreaming of returning to a semi-normal life, but now she’s experiencing a strange new urge . . . to join Caleb in running with the wolves.

1thoughtsThis was an interesting story. Anna’s been on the run from her husband for a while now. She’s learned to become resourceful and it also helps that she has a doctorate degree. So she’s been able to blend into the crowd and find jobs every time she’s moved. However, no matter how bad she wants to remain anonymous among the crowd, she can’t stand by and watch someone get killed. Little does she know that the guy she’s saving is a werewolf. A werewolf who’s also a bounty hunter.

“I was the ass-backward Red Riding Hood.”

I liked that Anna had previous experiences with werewolves and doesn’t take long to warm up to the fact that Caleb is one. In fact, she knows it the night she saves his life. She was a pretty strong character who had been beaten down enough and wasn’t going to take it anymore. She’s not only not scared of Caleb but she also isn’t intimidated by him to obey his every command. She ends up being quite the asset to Caleb and his work.

Caleb is a werewolf, so you expect some sort of possessiveness when it comes to Anna. However, his character was also consistent. He didn’t go from alpha male to whimpering pansy all because he found his mate. Nope, he stayed the same throughout the book and I really enjoyed it.

This was a great continuation of the story. You could technically read this one as a stand alone. I have only read the first in the series and jumped right to this one and had no problems following along. Granted, some of the characters from the first book come into play towards the end of this book, but the majority of the story focuses on Anna and Caleb. Maybe Anna played a roll in the last book? She definitely had a connection to the people from the original book so who knows. Either way, this is a great series for any paranormal romance lover.

1favequote“Note to self: Stop making comparisons between Dog the Bounty Hunger and Caleb. He wouldn’t find them amusing, and I couldn’t stop picturing Caleb with a libido-killing haircut. Also, I liked to think I was above calling him Wolf the Bounty Hunter – even behind his back.”

Is she really encountering her one true love from the past?

When Maggie Ramos signs her divorce papers, she’s determined to start a new life free from her ex-husband’s verbal abuse and unfaithful behavior.

As a new start and celebration, Maggie decides to take a trip to Bisbee and Tombstone, Arizona. Because of her fascination with history, the two places have always captivated her with their rich pasts.

During a tour of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, Maggie’s encounter with a miner named Joseph leaves her questioning her sanity. Claiming that he is her dead husband from the past, he is determined to prove to her that their love was real. He takes her on a journey vacillating between the present and the early 1900s, leaving Maggie to wonder if her psyche is shattering, or if she is really encountering her one true love from the past.

Does true love transcend death?

Excerpt“Margaret?”

She jumped and stepped back, putting a hand over her heart. The miner she had seen earlier stood before her, and now that he was closer, a strong feeling of recognition overcame her. She tried to remember where she knew him from, but the information eluded her.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Do I know you?”

The man smiled, his teeth bright against his dirt-stained skin. She guessed his age at twenty-five or so as he took off his hat and ran his fingers through a mop of chin-length black hair. His light blue eyes twinkled as he smiled. “It’s me, Joseph. I’m shocked that you’re here. I knew you’d come back, Margaret.”

Why was he calling her Margaret? The last time someone called her by her given name she had been in line waiting to be summoned by the worker at the DMV.

A cauldron of emotions swept through Maggie, and she took another step away from him. Her heart raced as she tried to put a name on the feelings: uncertainty, excitement, relief, fear, and . . . something else she couldn’t pinpoint. For the life of her, she couldn’t place where she knew this man. However, it was obvious he was very pleased and seemed excited to see her.

“I’m sorry, but it’s just not coming to me. Where have we met?” she asked.

“Margaret, I’m your husband, Joseph. Please try to remember,” he said.

Her husband? What he said resonated as truth deep within Maggie, and she felt the urge to run, but something held her there, standing in front the miner. She shook her head. Obviously, this man . . . Joseph . . . had her confused with someone else.

“I wasn’t sure it was you until you smiled at me,” he said, “but then I knew. Only you could smile at me like that and light a fire within my heart.”

Maggie swallowed, trying to wet her throat so she could set this guy straight.

“I’ve been waiting for you for so long, Margaret. I’m so happy to see you.”

Hell is looking for a way to break loose…

Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world’s first murderer, he’s plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it’s killing him.

After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can’t outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she’s thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she’s been trying to forget.

Sam strains Jax’s control over his darkness, but running isn’t an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

1thoughtsJax is a descendant from Cain. His family has been plagued by a curse. One where a male from the family hosts a demon inside of them. Jax was the winner of the draw. When his demon becomes too much to bear he skips town, never to be heard from again. But when his uncle (the man who raised him) falls ill, Jax finds himself back in the one place he vowed never to return to facing those he loves and those his demon would love to destroy.

This is the first book of Jus’ that I’ve ever read. I’ve heard a lot of great things about her other books and was really looking forward to this one. Sure I’ve read demon books before but they were just that, demon books. This one revolved around Cain and Abel and I must admit that it was an interesting story even if I was unfamiliar with the original story itself.

Even though Jax has a demon who demands peoples suffering and pain, he himself is a great guy. Sure he does the demon’s bidding when the pain get to be too much but he chooses people who are themselves either demons or horrible people and he never kills them, ever. So given his situation, he handles everything pretty well.

“My life was twisted. The more misery I caused people, the happier the demon was. The happier the demon was, the more I wanted to kick my own ass.”

Sam is the love of his life. She’s a stubborn woman who no matter what insults he throws her way, she sees through them. Even though she enrages his demon beyond control, she grounds him. She was one of those heroins who wasn’t too stupid and stubborn for their own good but wasn’t a total wimp either. She knew when to call bullshit with Jax and when to keep quiet as to not push the demon too far.

“San had blinders on when it came to me. I’d told her the truth. She’s seen the demon. I’s been a dick. Treated her like shit. I’d even tried-and failed- to scare her. What more could I possibly do?”

The story was a love story through the majority of it but quickly switched gears into a mega battle between demons by the end. A lot takes place in this story that I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. I didn’t see a lot of it coming and was really happy that the author thought outside the box and brought some creativity into the story.

1favequote“See now I’d love to say this is a good surprised, but ya know… You’re kinda like herpes. Totally unwanted.”
