Jack wrote an unfavorable article about the Ikati. Thus, gaining the attention of the ikati, who aren’t too thrilled to be written in an unfavorable manor. An idea is born that if Jack comes to their colony and witnesses how they aren’t so bad after all, she will write an article discrediting her previous work. However, she’s not just gonna go willingly into an area overrun with creatures. It isn’t until there’s a little blackmail involved that she decided to trudge into the monsters den.
Jack is a tough-as-nails reporter. She’s not afraid to get in the middle of the action to get her story. So it comes as no surprise that when she’s blackmailed into going to the Ikati, she goes along with the plan. She wasn’t holding her breath that they’d get her to change her mind about them. After all, Hawk slept with her, took photos of it, and blackmailed her. Nothing says “I was wrong about you” quite like a good ol’ blackmailing. However, she finds herself connecting with Hawk and soon realizes that she was quick to judge those whom she didn’t understand.
Hawk has been beaten down more times than he can count. He’s used to his brother, the Alpha, lashing out at him. So it comes as no surprised when he’s tasked with bringing Jack to the colony or face death. It isn’t until he brings her to his brother that he starts to second guess his decision. He starts to peel away Jack’s layers and realizes that she’s not as much of a bigot as he once thought. However, just when he starts to find himself falling in love with her, fate decides to shake things up.
Not only do we get their love story, but the story of the Ikati’s final showdown which is still forming. This isn’t a book that you can just read out of order. It’s true that every book deals with a new pair of characters but sometimes those character are introduced in the previous books. That isn’t really the case with this one, but the storyline itself is the heart of the story. Without reading the previous books you have no idea what the Ikati have been through. There would be no sense of the upcoming showdown which I’m assuming we will see all the previous characters in and with the way the author finished this book you know that the next, and final, book will be a doozy. Especially since she wrote the Queen’s (MC from the first book) children in a certain light that lets you know they will be a big asset in the last book. Not to mention all the various powers and strengths everyone is throwing around. You know it’s going to be one heck of an ending.
