Anna Latham never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack… and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the Chicago pack, she’s learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But when she discovers wrongdoing in her pack, she has to go above her Alpha’s head to ask for help.Charles Cornick is the son — and enforcer — of the leader of the North American werewolves. Now his father has sent him to Chicago to clean up a problem there. Charles never expected to find Anna, a rare Omega wolf — and he certainly never expected to recognize her as his mate.

When Anna realizes that her pack’s killing humans she goes behind her Alpha’s back and calls the Marrok (head of all North American werewolves). When she fills him in on what’s going on, he sends his second in command, Charles, which just so happens to be his son. Except when Charles shows up he quickly realizes that there is a lot more going on that what meets the eye.

Anna was changed against her will and has been beaten and raped into submission since becoming a werewolf three years ago. She has learned to cower to those with more dominance, which just so happens to be everyone and expects nothing but violence from any male. So when Charles comes along and is practically as dominant as they come she is immediately on her guard around him waiting for the moment he will strike.

Charles has been sent to Chicago to not only protect Anna but to figure out what is going on with her pack. He is his father’s enforcer and is well aware of the probability that he very well may have to “take care of things” in the pack. What he doesn’t expect is for his wolf to go completely out of control when it comes to Anna. Brother wolf is furious with how Anna has been treated and would like nothing more than to kill anyone who has ever done any wrong to her.

I loved this story. I’m not usually such a big fan of novellas but this story wasn’t rushed and really gave you an in depth look at Anna and Charles. I think if there weren’t a novella to the main story line some of this information would have been overlooked and you wouldn’t have realized how defeated Anna was and how much control it took Charles to slowly get Anna to trust him. Even though by the end of this book she isn’t 100% confident, she is far from the broken woman she was at the beginning.

Shortly after Charles’ arrival to Chicago he is in Anna’s apartment when Justin (the wolf who turned her) comes charging in threatening Anna. Charles steps in and lets his dominance show forcing Justin to retreat. However, Anna quickly runs to the kitchen and grabs a rolling pin to defend herself with. When Charles comes back from following Justin out of the apartment building he asks

“Why the rolling pin and not a knife?”
“A knife wouldn’t even slow him down, but bones take time to heal.”
He liked that. Who’d have thought he’s get turned on by a woman with a rolling pin.
