Amber Scott should be enjoying life as a college freshman. She should be pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian. She should be working hard to make sense of her precalculus math class.

She shouldn’t be waking up her college roommate with screaming nightmares. She shouldn’t be flashing back, reliving the three weeks of hell she barely survived last year. And she definitely shouldn’t be spending time with sexy player Marcus Reid.

But engineering student Marcus is the only one keeping Amber from failing her math course, so she grudgingly lets him into her life. She never expects the king of hookups will share his painful past. Or that she’ll tell him her secrets in return, opening up and trusting him in a way she thought she’d never be able to again.

When their fragile future together is threatened by a stalker Amber thought was locked away for good, Marcus is determined to protect her. And Amber is determined to protect Marcus…even if that means pushing him away.

1thoughtsTell Me When is an interesting new adult romance. You have your typical broken main characters who are trying to overcome their horrific pasts when they find comfort in each other. Their pasts come back to life to cause drama bombs in the story thus resulting in an unstable foundation. However, with that being said, this was an interesting read with new reasons on why the MC’s are broken.

Amber suffers from PTSD due to something that recently happened to her. Little by little you get the story as to what happened to her because every day is a challenge for her. Not only is she afraid of her own shadow, but certain things like lightening and roses bring back horrible flashbacks. So the readers never forget how traumatized Amber is throughout the story.

Marcus was your typical man whore who uses sex to overcome his pain. However, when meeting Amber he finds himself wanting a monogamous relationship. Yeah, he’s just like every other bad boy but the thing that torments him isn’t just a deadbeat mom. Oh no, it’s a lot worse than that and it horrified me.

Even though this story sort of follows the new adult mold, the author still thought outside the box and brought new elements into the story. I liked that even though the storyline was predictable, Stina was able to surprise me with small twists that I wasn’t expecting.

Review: The Learner by Alan Nayes

NayéLi has come from the dark side of the universe to learn as much as she can about the third planet from the sun, and to communicate her findings back to her home world. NayéLi is a Learner – and on Earth she assumes the form of a young human female of the indigenous host species.

NayéLi is bound by her rulers’ laws of planetary exploration, which state that there can be no involvement with a member of the host species. But NayéLi is more human now than she realizes. And she is about to fall in love.

1thoughtsNayéLi is an alien from another planet that was sent to Earth to learn about the land and the inhabitants. She’s spent hundreds of years wondering Earth, cataloging everything she witnesses. Her species is not only more advanced but also has the ability to shield themselves from the planets hosts. So they can wonder the world and blend in with people and if someone notices her, they forget all about her within a matter of minutes. However, Jared remembers her and she’s about to break the #1 rule of being a Learner. Never get involved with the native species.

I will be honest that the first half of the book was really slow moving for me. You go through the first time Jared see’s NayéLi. Weeks after their first meeting and how he constantly thinks about her and tries to find her again. Meanwhile NayéLi’s dialect is more background information about her planet and her mission. It isn’t until about 50% through the story that things started to move a bit faster. That’s when I really started to get interested in the story and the characters within it.

The world that Nayes created was definitely a new one for me. NayéLi is an interesting character who slowly starts to become more human throughout the story. I liked how they start to find ways around her shield as well. Which of course helps her feel more included on Earth than she’s ever been. I really started to feel sad for her and the situation that she was in both on Earth and once she returned to her planet.

This was definitely an interesting story and once I made my way through the first half, it really sucked me in. I’m hoping that now the story is underway the second book will pick up right where this one left off and I will be engrossed in the story from the first page.

1favequote“NayéLi, every species exhibits weakness. It’s not the weakness that makes us weak but how we confront it.”

Spotlight: Once We Were Brothers by Ronald H. Balson

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press Griffin
Published: Oct. 8, 2013
Genre: Thriller

The gripping tale about two boys, once as close as brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of the Holocaust.

Elliot Rosenzweig, a respected civic leader and wealthy philanthropist, is attending a fundraiser when he is suddenly accosted and accused of being a former Nazi SS officer named Otto Piatek, the Butcher of Zamosc. Although the charges are denounced as preposterous, his accuser is convinced he is right and engages attorney Catherine Lockhart to bring Rosenzweig to justice. Solomon persuades attorney Catherine Lockhart to take his case, revealing that the true Piatek was abandoned as a child and raised by Solomon’s own family only to betray them during the Nazi occupation. But has Solomon accused the right man?

Once We Were Brothers is Ronald H. Balson’s compelling tale of two boys and a family who struggle to survive in war-torn Poland, and a young love that struggles to endure the unspeakable cruelty of the Holocaust. Two lives, two worlds, and sixty years converge in an explosive race to redemption that makes for a moving and powerful tale of love, survival, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit.

Ronald H. Balson is an attorney practicing with the firm of Stone, Pogrund, and Korey in Chicago. An adjunct professor of business law at the University of Chicago for twenty-five years, Balson now lectures on trial advocacy in federal trial bar courses.

A few years ago, Balson was hired by his Chicago law firm to represent it in a case centered in southern Poland, the location of his book. For the next four years, he made multiple trips back and forth, and while there, he interviewed witnesses, studied documents and came to know more about the town of Zamosc. He learned that, during the World War II years, the Polish culture and country were destroyed and “sadness still pervades” there.

Balson started his own publishing company, Berwick Court, in order to self-publish his book, and as word of mouth spread, Once We Were Brothers became a runaway bestseller. St. Martin’s Press Griffin will now be publishing the trade paperback edition this October 2013.

Ian: Wicked Games by Samanthe Beck  (part of the anthology)

Grayson: Seducing Mr. Right by Katee Robert  (part of the anthology)

Landon: Tempted by His Best Friend by Cari Quinn  (part of the anthology)

Derek: Protecting What’s Theirs by Tessa Bailey  (part of the anthology)

Jett: Wicked Heat by Nicola Marsh

Trick: Dirty Trick by Christine Bell

Here are today’s questions for the men

Question #9: What kind of personality do you look for in a woman?

Ian: Confident, complicated, tough-on-the-outside but soft-on-the-inside, once she knows and trusts me.

Grayson: An independent woman who knows her own mind, and doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind.

Trick: Fun, easy-going, quick to laugh, loyal.

Derek: Feisty as hell, but soft when she needs to be. A woman who takes her responsibilities seriously, but also knows when to blow them off and spend the day underneath me in bed.

Jett: Killer sense of humor. It’s a huge turn-on to verbally spar with an intelligent woman. Great part of foreplay.

Landon: Fun, intelligent, someone who likes to laugh and love with equal intensity. A strong woman who matches me in every way. And if she likes to get a little – or a lot – freaky, even better.

Question #10: What’s your hottest “move” in the bedroom?

Ian: I’m a homicide detective, so I’ve always got the handcuffs handy.

Grayson: Ah, ah. As I said before, a gentleman never tells. However, I will say that it involves handcuffs.

Trick: I’m more of a hands-on kind of guy. If you give Gracie a call and have her come by, I’d be willing to demonstrate, though…

Derek: Pick one, baby.

Jett: Whatever pleases her. I like seeing my woman get off. Mouth, hands, the rest…I like to think of the whole package rather than one specific move.

Landon: Let’s just say I’m happy to spend a good long time on my knees before she gets on hers. Ladies come first in my book. And often.
