Mackenzie “Mac” Harris fled her hometown of Bluff Point, Maine, after being left at the altar–and seeking solace in the arms of her best friend’s off-limits brother. Now, seven years later, she’s back to attend her best friend’s wedding–safe, or so she thinks, from the mistakes of her youth.

But Gavin Tolliver has never forgotten the woman who has always held his heart. And when Mac rescues a stray puppy named Tulip, only Gavin, the town’s veterinarian, can help. With a little assistance from Tulip, Gavin vows to make Mac realize that their feelings are more than just puppy love…

My thoughts..

About a Dog is a super cute read. Absolutely perfect for summer reading, if I’m being honest. I don’t tend to enjoy the lighter contemporaries because they can come off as cheesy but this was well written. It kind of hit a lot of notes for me. There’s best-friends little brother romance, second chance romance, an adorable dog, a sexy veterinarian, and some pretty funny moments with some awesomely quirky characters.

I thought both Mac and Gavin were great. Mac was a little wishy-washy about her feelings for Gavin but it all had to do with the fact that he was her best friend’s younger brother. Normally you have it the other way around where the best friend is a guy and he’s crushing on the little sister but I liked the change-up with this story. Although, I didn’t understand why Mac kept thinking she was some sort of creeper for liking Gavin, even if he was 5 years younger than her. Especially when she recalls their time together as kids and all the little ways she was there for him when he needed it and he for her. So, the whole conflict was a bit silly for a pair of adults to be dealing with. It’s your typical lack of communication that got in the way when it came to these two. Regardless, I still really enjoyed the story because these two are super adorable together. From the first comment you see them in a room together you just know they are perfect for each other.

Can I just take a moment to talk about the title and cover for a moment? I thought the novel was appropriately titled because the romance kind of revolves around this adorable little pup named Tulip. Tulip is found behind a dumpster by Mac and she’s not in the best of shape. Tulip takes to her rescuer and wins over her heart instantly. Not overly sure what to do with a dog she just found, Mac turns to Gavin for help…  where the pup ultimately ties him around her little paw, too. Pretty soon this adorable little pooch is hanging out at the vet clinic and giving everyone kisses. She was the glue that held Mac and Gavin together. This story and romance really was about a dog. Plus, that cover is super cute. The moment I saw it I had to have it in my hands. While I wish the dude was a bit younger looking (Gavin’s 27 years old) the cover is no less adorable. And again, I think it’s because of the dog on the cover. It’s just a super cute photo and the font on it could not be more perfect. Bravo to the cover designer for putting this together.

Okay, I had planned to keep this short but look how well that went. I just can’t stop gushing over the adorableness of this book and I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this because this is not normally my thing. I like more edgier stories that have more of a bite to them but this was the perfect read on a hot day. If you are looking for a light romance with an adorable pup, lovable characters, and some fun wedding antics, then you have got to pick up this book.

Favorite part…

“They were still looking at each other with new respect when Gavin came out of an exam room with a kitten in his arms. Mac looked up from the counter and felt her heart stutter in her chest. The orange tabby looked tiny in his hands and Gavin held him with gentleness that made Mac’s ovaries want to throw all of their eggs at him at once like he was the target in a dunk tank.”
