Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.

When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood — paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals — he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one (hidden due to spoilers) gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible.”

Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell (hidden due to spoilers) is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the Brotherhood knows the first rule: don’t fall for your target.

But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.

What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?

Alexei always does his own investigating before we signs the contract to kill. Which is how he ends up in the middle of Alaska, sitting in a bar, wondering how a human wounded up on the Forgotten Brotherhood’s radar. Between Alexei’s bear scenes and his vampire abilities, Cassie’s scent comes up human. However, there’s no way she’d end up on a hit list if she were. As he continues to track her to see what she is, he soon realizes that there’s a lot more to Cassie than meets the eye.

First off, I love that the sifter in this story is not only a polar bear, but a vampire. His hybrid nature really added some extra dimension to his character. They definitely did a good job on the cover because that’s pretty much how I pictured him looking. Then you have Cassie’s character who I didn’t see coming. I honestly don’t think I fully read the synopsis to know what Cassie was beforehand. I kind of wish they omitted what she was from the synopsis because it makes for one shocking moment when it’s revealed. Which is why I hid it from the synopsis above. Trust me, finding out what Cassie is in the book is WAY better than reading it in the blurb.

Both of these characters are strong in their own right. Cassie hides it well behind her small frame and sweet disposition. Alexei’s is kind of on full display, but what he hides underneath is a softer sweeter side. It was interesting seeing these two balance each other out. I will say that I wish that there was more romance building for them. They just sort of fell in bed together, and couldn’t seem to keep their hands off of each other. Every time I turned around they were ripping each other’s clothes off. I just kind of wish for more story building and character building for them. The sex scenes started to overshadow the story line.

Arctic Bite was an interesting paranormal romance. It can be read as a stand alone, since that’s exactly what I did. I loved the fact that this story revolves around a polar bear vampire, and Cassie’s character. That’s not a combo you see every day. However, I thing this story could have used more character development. I just didn’t grow attached to the characters and as a result, found myself rolling my eyes at some of their actions/words. I will be interested to see what duo the author comes out with next, though.

4 Thoughts on “Review: Arctic Bite by N.J. Walters

  1. My goodness! I haven’t read any paranormals in quite some time, and used to be hooked on vampires a lot – but a polar bear AND a vampire shifter sure sounds different, and definitely grabs the attention! Hugs, RO

  2. I am really intrigued by this author and eager to start this series soon. The covers are so intense and love a good paranormal and I love the idea of a polar vampire shifter.

    Great review

  3. I loved this one so much. This first book was good too.

  4. I’ve seen a few reviews for this one. I’m curious. Even more curious because of the polar bear/vampire guy, lol. That is certainly unusual!
The cover is very nice too… Eye catching. 😉
