Mackenzie “Max” Miller has a problem. Her parents have arrived in town for a surprise visit, and if they see her dyed hair, tattoos, and piercings, they just might disown her. Even worse, they’re expecting to meet a nice wholesome boyfriend, not a guy named Mace who has a neck tattoo and plays in a band. All her lies are about to come crashing down around her, but then she meets Cade.

Cade moved to Philadelphia to act and to leave his problems behind in Texas. So far though, he’s kept the problems and had very little opportunity to take the stage. When Max approaches him in a coffee shop with a crazy request to pretend to be her boyfriend, he agrees to play the part. But when Cade plays the role a little too well, they’re forced to keep the ruse going. And the more they fake the relationship, the more real it begins to feel.

My thoughts…

Max pretends to be something she’s not around her family. Her parents think she’s this sweet and wholesome girl. They have no idea that what she hides under her turtlenecks and smiles, are tattoos and piercings. Her parents think she’s dating a nice boy that she met in the library, not the drummer from her band who gets high on pills. So, when her parents surprise her with an impromptu visit, like literally a 5 minute warning that they are meeting her at the coffee shop she’s in, she panics and latches onto a stranger in the coffee shop who looks like a goody-two-shoes. All she needs is for him to pretend to be her boyfriend for an hour while her parents pop into the coffee shop to see her. However, what she doesn’t expect is for her plan to work so well that her parents fall in love with him. Now she’s stuck pretending a little bit longer than she’d planned, but it’s not all bad.

Faking It was pretty much a good boy meets bad girl romance. Which isn’t something you see all too often. Usually it’s the other way around. I loved how aggressive and vocal Max was. She’s the lead singer in her band, she’s covered in tattoos and piercings, and she tends to swear a little bit. Cade was a more gentle character. He charmed the pants off of everyone he met, volunteers at the local recreation center for kids, and actually frequents the library. These two complimented each other perfectly.

This was the first audiobook I’ve ever been able to listen from start to finish. I have to say that for someone who has never grasped the concept of audiobooks, Faking It may have just changed my mind. Not only was I able to picture everything going on, but I couldn’t seem to take the headphones off. I had only planned to listen to the book while I packed up my house for the move, but I found myself continuing to listen to the book while I made/ate lunch & dinner, took breaks, and when my night was over, I just sat on the couch listening to the book until it ended. The guy who read Cade was amazing. He not only conveyed the emotions going on in Cade, he was pretty good with changing his voice and adding in accents when other characters came into play. Even when a female was talking, you were still able to tell the difference between the different female characters. He was just that good.

There was quite a bit of humor in this story that had me laughing. Maybe it was because I was listening to it and hearing the character’s inner musings instead of reading them, but I found myself laughing out loud on more than a few occasions. I’m sure I looked like a crazy person just standing there, packing away in silence, and then would randomly bust out laughing.

Faking It was another great book by Cora Carmack. I’ve read Losing It and loved it. I can’t wait to read not only the next book in the series, but all of Cora’s books as well. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read the next book in the series. I really need to get more of her books!
