I may be a Prince, but there are things that trouble me about my father’s royal ruleโ€”the forced abduction, experimentation, and torture of alien creatures. The king has a new prisoner who’s a carefully kept secret…

There’s a young female who belongs to a little-known civilization I have been studying extensively. They are human, belonging to a small, undeveloped planet called Earth. She is pretty in a way I find unusual and compelling. Sometimes I sneak into the adjoining cell and we talk about everything and nothing, even as I find myself yearning to touch her strange, soft skin.

Skin that is being subjected to invasive tests and experiments. A body that’s scheduled for a live dissection in fifteen days. And a life that will be terminated unless I risk my future and life to help her escape…

1thoughtsAmerica was out camping with some friends when she’s suddenly abducted by aliens and brought back to their planet for testing. She has no idea what’s in store for her but Prince Garran (prince of the planet she’s been taken to) does know what her future holds. His father is a ruthless man who likes to prove their superiority over other life forms by abducting them and preforming bone marrow and other live experiments on his test subjects before doing a live dissection on the creature. After a few conversations with the human subject, Garran decides to free the human and return her back to her planet.

This sounded like such an interesting story but unfortunately this did not work for me. I’d have been okay with the whole intergalactic love story considering that Garran is just a human covered in shells. Nothing too scary there. However, America is only in captivity for a few weeks and within that time she and Garraen fall in love, give their virginity to each other, and risk their lives for the other. I found that to be highly unbelievable. Which is saying a lot since this is a romance revolving around an abducted human girl and an alien.

I will give the author props for coming up with Garran’s kind and putting a lot of detail into his species. The author doesn’t just say that Garran and his people are humanoids covered in a shell type armor, she describes it in great detail. Not only that but you are always reading about their face shell plates shifting during conversations or the change in facial expressions. Another thing I liked is that America’s experiment visits weren’t overshadowed. The author takes us along for the ride while America is carted away to the lab. While it was a bit horrific to read, it also added a sense of realism to the story.

In the end, I don’t plan on reading any more from this series. No matter how cool the world building was, it couldn’t bring the characters to life or make me believe in their love story.

1favequote“I wish you could see me here on Earth, Father. This is what you wanted to do to America – cut her skin, crack open her ribs, and explore – a sick notion, especially for a king, and now it has happened to me.”

12 Thoughts on “Review: Gamma Rift by Kalli Lanford

  1. I hear you, it seems unbelievable and even science-fiction has to be believable to a point ๐Ÿ˜‰ But since I read your review, one question bothers me : is he covered in shells… everywhere ? Because that musn’t be comfortable, lol !

    • Yeah, I can let some things go but I still need to believe in what’s going on. To answer your question, his species is completely covered in shells.

  2. It sounds interesting, but yeah the unbelievable bits would get me too.

  3. Well, dang! It sounded like it had so much potential. Too bad it was unbelievable.

  4. I hope I didn’t jinx you!

I wouldn’t have picked this up anyways because aliens. I don’t do ET’s!

    • Thanks. Ya had to say something. ๐Ÿ˜› It was bound to happen. I feel like I’m just trying to dig myself out of quick sand. I’m just going to re-read my favorite series and get back in the game.

  5. Well that’s a real different species. Definitely not read that before. Shame the romance side of it was such a miss.

    • It was kind of hard to picture the species in all honesty. I mean, how do you picture someone covered in shell? However, I like that they are humanoids. That made it a lot easier on me. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Fast love is so stupid! This one sounded good too. Sucks.

    • It’s hard to get behind. I can sometimes do it when it’s a shifter book because of the whole “mates” thing but even then it can be a bit hard to swallow if it’s immediate love.
