This is not a book that you can just pick up and read. You have to read the first book in the series before reading this one. Even though the two books don’t revolve around the same main characters, Luc and Jade play big roles in the first book. Without reading it, you won’t know their history or have a good grasp of the Bane and everything that’s going on. Trust me, I know. I started the series with this book. Made it to about the third chapter, gave up, bought the first book and had no problem picking up the story after.
Like I said we meet Luc and Jade in the first book. Luc is a man whore and Jade has not hid the fact that she plans to kill him. However, it isn’t until Kiss of the Betrayer that we find out why she is so hostile towards Luc.
Considering that Jade has sort of been on her own since she was a kid and Luc being Luc, there is a lot more action in this book. The two main characters from Shiels of Fire, Ravyn and Rhys play a huge part in this novel. We also follow Incarus again while in the Shadow World and watch as he develops an attachment to another Bane.
There wasn’t a whole heck of a lot of romance in this story. The fighting and fantasy world definitely take take the forefront in this story. Not that I’m complaining because I liked all of the action. The only thing that I didn’t like was the dialogue, it seems rather robotic and choppy. It didn’t flow as well as I’d have liked and that really took away from the story for me.
Overall, this is a great continuation of the story. I wasn’t surprised that Luc and Jade got their own story but I’m curious if we will move onto someone else or if we will continue to follow these four while they battle the Bane.
