Once Alex crashes into Zina’s life–literally–there’s no denying their chemistry. But are their feelings for each other enough to keep Alex in Texas for good, or will he follow the march of the penguins back to the South Pole?

My thoughts…

When Zina’s pit bull rescue ends up in jeopardy due to building issues, she takes refuge in what is supposed to be a vacant warehouse. However, she soon finds out that she will be splitting the warehouse for a little while with penguins. Apparently there’s some bit wig millionaire who’s daughter wants to have a wedding in Texas… with penguins. Needless to say, what ensues is a lot of chaos for everyone.

This was a cute romcom that deals with a lot of animals, two people over their heads, and a looming wedding date from hell. I will admit that the romance didn’t really work for me. I don’t know why, but I had a hard time connecting with these two. However, what drew me in wasn’t the dogs… I know you thought I was going to say the dogs or even the penguins, but nope! What drew me in was Alex’s grandpa who helps out. This poor old man has lost his children and his wife. Not only that but his granddaughter keeps sticking him in nursing homes when all he wants to do is go back to the ranch where he spent all his years with his wife. So when his grandson make an appearance after a decade away, he’s ready to be tossed around some more. However, he’s able to work out a deal with Alex and starts helping at both the dog rescue, and the with the penguins. Seeing him go from this comatose angry person to this guy full of life was just beautiful.

I think my problem with connecting with the characters or their story is because you get the sense that Alex is not into setting down roots, but we’re never told why. He just despises the idea of having people rely on him or the idea of being stationary for too long. We’re also given some leads that there is someone stalking Zina and threatening her over the dog shelter, but that just ends up being forgotten throughout the story. What ever became of that? There just a few things that just pop up in the story without there being any background info or follow up. So in the end, I just felt like this was a story being told instead of reading about someone’s life. Which is probably why I gravitated towards the grandpa so much. He had such rich character development that it was hard to not take notice of him when he popped up on the page.

Her Kind of Cowboy was a fun read. There were a lot of things that happen in this book. Which I wish that the characters had more depth and history to them, and that certain things were fleshed out a bit more, I still enjoyed reading about how these two were going to pull off this crazy wedding.
