Storm Eldon was first caught up in the war between England and Scotland as a young girl, when she and her family were held hostage by their sworn enemies, the MacLagans. Years later, Storm finds herself trapped in the clutches of her Scottish adversaries once again. Now she must fight to preserve her loyalties, guard her virtue, and resist the charms of Tavis MacLagan, her handsome Highland captor. . .

The story starts out with Storm as a child, and Tavis as a teen. When Tavis encounters Storm and a group of children from the neighboring enemy clan, he is happy to have found a way for his clan to go home with a nice bit of money due to the ransom they are about to propose. However, Tavis soon learns that the little girl has a lot of spirit in her, and soon finds himself taken with her. He decides that when she is grown, he will visit her and claim her. Seven years later, seventeen year old Storm is captured again by Tavis. However, no longer a child, Tavis has plans for his new captive.

Now, there were times that I enjoyed this story, and times when I didn’t. Storm was one of the highlights to the story. Storm is strong-willed and doesn’t back down. She doesn’t play the meek female role that others expect of her, and will gut you if she gets the chance. However, Tavis and Storm’s relationship was hard to swallow. Let’s be honest here, he pretty much rapes her, but because he brought her pleasure in the process, everything is okay. The author keeps pointing this out, that it wasn’t rape because her body responded to him, even though she repeatedly told him no and asked him to reconsider. So, yeah, I had a huge problem with their relationship. I get that over time Storm became a member of the clan during her captivity, but the fact that she was a captive and Tavis’ plaything never diminished.

The story did hold my attention, but I felt like the author added a lot of random stuff to add drama to the story. Honestly, with as many things that happened in this story, there were enough climaxes for an entire series. People were being poisoned, there were multiple abductions, murder attempts, tortures, and battles that it felt like the author used up everything in her arsenal in one book.

I was actually kind of looking forward to this book, but there was a lot that left a sour taste in my mouth. I didn’t care for the hero or his one brother who tried to force himself on Storm. Which, everyone seemed okay with. Heck, another brother just stood by in the shadows and watched it all play out. But I guess because Storm found him pleasing to the eye and his touch set fire to her loins, that it was all forgiven in the end. I didn’t understand Storm’s and Tavis’ relationship. I honestly just didn’t care for this story. Yeah, I will not be revisiting this series or this author again.

3 Thoughts on “Review: His Bonnie Bride by Hannah Howell

  1. Argh! There’s nothing worse than getting a book that you have been keen for, and it doesn’t deliver! Great review, and good on you for reading it through.

  2. I can understand why you didn’t like most of it. I’m not sure I would like this one either.

  3. This author tends to add extra stuff at times to her stories, not sure I have read this one, I read a ton of her books years ago before we had Goodreads lol I have loved everything she has read but I think you need to like her style of storytelling ….but I am sorry to hear that this book was such a struggle for you and that it had so many issues for you. I just had a book like that this past week and it sucked. Hope your next one is so much better for you.
