Staying in love can mean running away…

Two years after watching her kidnappers go to prison, Naomi Jensen is still in love with one of them. Jesse will be released in a few years, and Naomi knows college is the perfect distraction while she waits. But when her new friend Finn makes her question what is right and what is wrong, she begins to wonder if Jesse is the one for her…until she discovers he’s out on parole. Naomi must sort through her confusion to figure out where love and freedom truly lie-in Finn, who has no connections to her past, or Jesse, who has just asked her to run away with him.

*Don’t read review unless you’ve read the previous novel, The Breakaway. There will be spoilers from the previous book in this review.*

I loved the last book (The Breakaway) that followed Naomi as she was kidnapped and held captive for a year. This book takes place 2 years later. Naomi still has flashbacks to her 1 yr stay with the kidnappers. However, she still has fond memories of the female, Evelyn and Jesse, the boy who sort of became her boyfriend at the end. Jesse’s been in prison this entire time but pretty soon, Naomi finds out that he’s on parole and pretty soon the life that she’s been living for the last 2 years is flipped upside down again.

Of course, the author doesn’t disappoint with messing with our heads. She puts us on another roller coaster ride of emotions as things play out for Naomi. First it seems like Naomi is moving on with her life and has finally found a nice guy who understands her but then Jesse is released on parole and then he’s off of parole and asking her to run away with him. The entire time I will admit I was curious about Jesse but I really liked the new guy and thought he was perfect for her. However, like Naomi, I wanted to give Jesse a shot because I had mixed feelings about him. He was one of her kidnappers after all but he had done small gestures for Naomi and tried to watch out for her while she lived in their house. So I sort of liked the guy but in this book, we see Jesse out in the real world and you realize that maybe he wasn’t who you thought he was.

I like that the author decided to write a companion novel for Naomi. I would’ve been okay if she finished with The Breakaway but it was nice to finally get closure for the characters. It was also interesting to see Naomi in life outside of being kidnapped and Jesse outside in the real world. I’m a little sad to see the characters go but it was one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride.

“You’re stronger than you think, just not in the ways most people expect.”- Jesse

Michelle lives and writes in Utah, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. She loves the seasons, but late summer and early fall are her favorites. She adores chocolate, sushi, and lots of ethnic food, and loves to read and write books in whatever time she can grab between her sword-wielding husband and energetic daughter. She believes a simple life is the best life.

  2. I skimmed this because I haven’t read book 1 and had forgotten about it until recently, so I’ve bought the Kindle version and I’m looking forward to catching up!
