Remy Novem was murdered…

But she didn’t die.

Forced to escape to Somniare, a dream landscape, Remy must somehow survive living nightmares, and endless torment without using her magic. Her only hope for freedom is to hitch a ride with a human back into reality, tricking the poor creature into believing no harm will befall them.

Remy isn’t troubled by the fact that she must kill to live…

Until love changes everything.

My thoughts…

I loved the concept of the story. You have a witch who escapes being murdered by going into the dream world called Somniare. She has to navigate all these crazy dreams, creatures, and dangers in order to find a way out and get back into the real world. There’s also a kitsune familiar, a Fae hottie, and a creepy living voodoo doll from Remy’s childhood. Sounds like the perfect set up, right? I suppose for fans of Alice in Wonderland or any other sort of book that hops all over the place with little to no reasoning or plausibility, you’ll love it! I’m not a fan of AiW [gasp!] mainly because it’s all over the place and doesn’t make any sense. Which is what happened to me in this book. We jump from one crazy scene to the next where Remy is always getting into trouble, there are characters who pop in and out out of nowhere, and I just felt lost and confused the majority of the time. Which I get. I get it! It’s a dream world and there’s supposed to be all these dreams happening at once and it’s supposed to be chaotic and confusing because it’s not real… but I just couldn’t handle it. I have been a huge fan of the author’s previous work but this one wasn’t for me. However, if you like to be kept on your toes, and like the chaoticness of AiW, then you may like this one.

Favorite part…

I loved the kitsune. Unagi (yes, that’s the poor creature’s name) pops in to help Remy in her time of need and really has no qualms about letting her know where she stands. If I decided to revisit this novel (which I might do down the road) it would be for Unagi. The character was very interesting and I liked what they brought to the table.

18 Thoughts on “Review: Somniare by D.T. Dyllin

  1. Dang! I love kitsune. I actually just read a manga containing a kitsune character and he was sooo cute. I can’t say that I love Alice in Wonderland but I do enjoy the movies haha, so maybe I could try this one. Great review Kristin 🙂

    • I do, too. The kitsune in this one was really cute and I loved that it didn’t identify with any one gender. So, it’s human form fluctuated between male and female when they used it. It’s a really interesting concept and maybe I will pick it back up later on.

  2. lol I feel the same about Alice in Wonderland retellings…
    Great review!

    • I just need to have my stories dumbed down I guess. I tried reading another popular book that was written in a journal format and was all crazily (format wise) written and sort of popped all over the place (they were a drug addict) and I just couldn’t deal. I need to have everything laid out for me of I get confused and frustrated. It’s a really interesting concept though and maybe I will pick it back up later on.

  3. I don’t think I would like this book either. Your review was great however and gave me pause for thought. Have a great weekend ahead! #GetSocial17

  4. I like the cover, really good 🙂 I am a bit of a cover lover hehe

    • I know. I LOVE the cover. I love the next cover even more. The girl is brandishing a flaming katana. 🙂 I may just get the second book just for the awesome cover.

  5. Love the over but the story doesn’t sound like one I’d like.

  6. I saw this on Instagram the other day (probably you lol) and the cover grabbed my attention. Not sure I would like it though.

    For What It’s Worth

    • LoL Probably. I know we follow each other on IG. Love all the pup pics by the way. My family had a Sheltie when I was a little girl. Best. Dog. Ever!

  7. Sorry this one did not work for you. I don’t it would for me either. Thanks for sharing. #getsocial17

    • It’s a really interesting concept so I may come back to it down the road. The author definitely thought outside the box with this one so I have to hand it to her. It’s just not my thing. 🙂

  8. Sorry you didn’t enjoy this as much. Awesome review. It helps me decide and I believe it helps many readers. I hope your next read way better. Yeah, the cover is gorgeous, so it could be a selling point.

    • Thanks. I’m glad I was able to help. I will say it’s an interesting concept and I applaud the author for thinking outside the box on this one. I just don’t care for these types of stories. Who knows though, I may give this book another chance down the road.

  9. Ergs. Yeah Alice in Wonderland is really iffy for me. Some authors can do the storyline really well and other times it leaves my brain hurting. Bummer this one didn’t pan out.

  10. The cover is really good and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
