Sophia Parsons’ family has skeletons, but they aren’t in their graves…

Solving the mystery of an ancestor’s hanging might silence the clashing whispers in Sophia’s mind, but the cult in her town and the supernaturals who secretly reside there are determined to silence her first.

As Sophia unknowingly crosses the line into an elemental world full of vampire-like creatures, shapeshifters, and supernatural grim reapers, she meets Charles, a man who becomes both lover and ally.

But can she trust him?

It’s not until someone nearly kills Sophia that she realizes the only way to unveil the source of her family’s curse: abandon her faith or abandon her humanity. If she wants to survive, she must accept who she is, perform dark magic, and fight to the death for her freedom.

I have never read a book where the protagonist was a witch and I wasn’t overly sure whether I would like it or not. Obviously I really enjoyed the book. I couldn’t seem to put it down!

I really liked Sophia’s character. At the beginning of the book you see how much crap she puts up with in her day to day life. She is pretty much the outcast of the town and as a result doesn’t have many friends. But when one of her friends takes her to a club, Sophia has no idea that she is walking into a club for supernaturals which is where she meets Charles. Even though Sophia is sort of a meek character, she does have a backbone and when push comes to shove she will do anything to save those whom she cares about. She was easy to relate to because she was the perfect mix between the bad-ass and shy heroines that you see now a days in novels.

I liked the back story about Sophia’s ancestors and even the romance between Charles and Sophia. However, it was a little hard to wrap my head around the fact that there was so much sexual tension between them for no reason… after like 6 months of dating. I get that Sohpia was worried about their relationship not lasting but then what is the point in dating? You’re still putting yourself through emotional distress in the end anyways. Aside from that though, the story had a smooth pacing to it and transitioned well between the different scenes.

All in all though, I really enjoyed the book. It had a good blend of mystery, romance and some fight scenes. If you like paranormal romance or urban fantasy then this is a good book to read.

Shortly after meeting Charles at the club he shows up at her house in the middle of the night to make sure that she is safe (they were attacked at the club by vampires). When she lets him in he looks around her room and says

“Not much of a basketball player, then?”
“Huh?” I followed his gaze. He was staring at the corner of my room, by the door. Oh no. A pair of lacy-black, boy short underwear lay crumpled in a ball on the floor in front of the hamper.
“You missed.”

  1. Oh what a snippet you chose, I couldn’t help but laugh. The story does sound interesting and I do happen to adore the name Charles. Thank you for the review C:

  2. I’ve never heard of this book but the cover really stands out. I haven’t read many witch books but they seem to be rally popular this year!
