Ryder Copeland is an accomplished architect and one heck of a father…not to mention tall and sexy. He’s everything a hero should be, and Lord knows, Maisy Kelly has read enough of her great-aunt Eloise’s romance novels to recognize one when she sees one. But like all fairy tales, Maisy can’t help but wonder if this Prince Charming is too good to be true…

Ryder is drawn to the shy, curly haired professor who hires him to convert the Victorian house she’s inherited from her aunt into a romance bookstore. Attracted to a woman for the first time since his divorce, Ryder finds himself wishing for a future with Maisy that he knows is impossible. Ryder has never wavered from his plan to leave the small town of Fairdale, North Carolina, so he can give his daughter the life she deserves. But suddenly he’s not so sure. And the closer he gets to Maisy, the harder it’s going to be to walk away…

Maisy has inherited her aunt’s old house which just so happens to be overrun with books. As it turns out, her aunt was a bit of a romance book hoarder. Maisy decides to take what her aunt left her and turn it into something fun and exciting, a romance-only bookstore. When she hired Ryder to help renovate the house and make her dream come true, she wasn’t planning on falling in love. However, nothing goes as planned, especially when love is involved.

I loved the idea of a romance bookstore owner and a single father finding love. I have read and enjoyed the author’s Point Bluff Romance series and was really looking forward to diving into this. However, and I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I just didn’t enjoy this story. I never felt drawn to the characters, their connections, or their romance. If anything, I felt more attached to the tiny kitten that they nurse back to health. Maybe it was the fact that we are told that Maisy and Ryder have a connection instead of feeling it. Maybe the slow pace left me a bit bored. All I know is that I struggled to read this and kept pushing myself to pick it back up, only to put it down after only reading a couple of pages.

Normally I read a book in a day or two, but it took me a week just to get to the halfway point of The Good Ones. I hate throwing in the towel, but sometimes you just have to do it.

  1. Oh no, sorry to hear you struggled with this one.

  2. I’ve read some of her Library Lovers mysteries, but not her romances. Too bad this one didn’t work for you, because I agree, the premise sounds delightful.

  3. Darn. It sure sounded good and such a great cover. I enjoy happy ever afters but I guess I better pass on this one. Thanks for sharing your review:)

  4. Oh no…it’s rare when I don’t finish reading a book. Sometimes the ending can make it worth it, but if it takes me a week…I’m done with it. Too many books out there I know I will like.

Oof! The tell instead of show! I hate that, Kristin. I’m sorry this one didn’t work out for you. It did seem like it had a lot of promise. Hopefully your current read is tripping your trigger. 😉
