The Heir

Publication Date: May 5, 2015
Genre: Dystopian Young Adult
Rating:

Princess Eadlyn has grown up hearing endless stories about how her mother and father met. Twenty years ago, America Singer entered the Selection and won the heart of Prince Maxon—and they lived happily ever after. Eadlyn has always found their fairy-tale story romantic, but she has no interest in trying to repeat it. If it were up to her, she’d put off marriage for as long as possible.

But a princess’s life is never entirely her own, and Eadlyn can’t escape her very own Selection—no matter how fervently she protests.

Eadlyn doesn’t expect her story to end in romance. But as the competition begins, one entry may just capture Eadlyn’s heart, showing her all the possibilities that lie in front of her . . . and proving that finding her own happily ever after isn’t as impossible as she’s always thought.

I read The Selection a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. So, I was really excited when the fourth book in the series focused on those main character’s daughter, Eadlyn. Eadlyn is slotted to become Queen when her father steps down but with her country in turmoil, her father has come up with an idea to host another Selection for Eadlyn to find a husband. Not only is it time for Eadlyn to start looking to settle down but with the Selection celebrations going on, they hope to distract the people and give them something to look forward to. Eadlyn has no intention to actually carry through and marry any of the young men who show up but over time she finds herself slowly making connections with each of them.

Eadlyn was a very difficult character to like. She’s nothing like her mother was at that age. She’s spoiled, brash, and seems to look down on everyone without meaning to. I mean, she asks her maid how her relationship with a chemist even came to be considering she’s just a maid. What?! And she saw nothing wrong with the question and had no clue how she offended her maid. Really? There were just so many times where she stuck her nose up in the air at others around her that I wanted to scream at her. Then I thought to myself, this is a girl who’s lived an extremely privileged life, who has never had to consort with the common folk, and has only every been around other royalty. So, her spoiled attitude wasn’t far fetched considering her upbringing. Plus, if she was sickly sweet and oh so perfect, I probably would have hated her anyways.

While this is a book that’s later in a series, it can be read as the beginning of it’s own series between this and The Crown. Yeah, her parent’s like to reminisce about their own Selection but it doesn’t really play a huge part in the book. The only thing you would want to know going in is that there was a caste system in place that sectioned the people into different groups. One of course being the royal family and then the richer get more poor as the number progressed. However, her parent’s did away with that when they got married. So, it’s of really no importance other that it comes up a few times in this book. Other than that, you could dive right into this with no problem.

I really enjoyed The Heir. I liked that we got to see a female take the reigns and call the shots when it came to the Selection. I liked the different guys who are competing for her affection. While it definitely has a love hexagon thing going on, it’s understandable because of the situation. It’s pretty much the Bachelorette but Princess style. I look forward to reading the next book and seeing who Eadlyn actually chooses.

Favorite quote…

“I remember how angry I was when I saw his name come up the day of the drawing, like I was being cheated somehow. Not I didn’t care how that form ended up in the pile; I was just glad it did.

I hoped that he felt the same way.”

  11. Lovely review! I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed this book overall – even if the main character was a bit unlikeable. I’m right here with you on that one! It took me a little while to actualy warm up to the character, but still, The Heir was a fun and entertaining read. I still haven’t read the next book though…. I should, someday, I’m curious to see who she will end up with. Definitely a guilty pleasure kind of series 🙂
