Identifying her parents was the hardest thing ever, until Kaya learned she was the killer’s next target. Moving had thrown the ancient predator off her trail temporarily but with magical abilities manifesting, Kaya’s scent grows stronger and the attempts on her life become constant. Narrowly surviving each encounter, Kaya is desperate to stop her potential assassin, but it’s hard to kill a creature that changes its appearance and disappears without a trace. Kaya finds the support she needs to succeed in her small group of friends and her boyfriend Kenneth. Like so many things, they’re more than what they seem and with the killer having unsettling similarities to Kenneth and his family…Kaya can’t help but wonder if there’s a connection.

Deleted Scene

“How many times do I have to say yes Kays,” he asked tired of repeating himself.

“Ok I get it and it’s Kaya not Kays Kenneth,” she said to him meaningfully.

“Did it ever occur to you that I like Kays better,” he said in that smart alec tone she was starting to get used to.

What’s worse is he used Kaya’s own words against her.

“Ok, but that is not my name,” she insisted starting to get mad.

“It is my pet name for you Kaya,” he chuckled when he said it clearly amused at her agitation.

“Pet name!  A pet name is a term of endearment you give someone you care about, like a girlfriend! I am hardly your girlfriend,” she exclaimed rapidly reaching her limit of annoyed tolerance.

“Yea but I can wish can’t I,” he retorted.

She stood there staring at the phone, and had no clue what to say in response without sounding stupid so she spat out the first thing that came to mind.

“Oh, okay whatever you say Kenneth, why are you calling,” she demanded.

“I would like to take you to get some ice-cream. I didn’t get to talk to you as long as I would have liked today at school,” he admitted.

“I am sure my aunt won’t go for that.” I assured him. “So you are not totally against going with me for ice-cream then,” he asked sounding hopeful.

“Well no, but my aunt won’t go for it,” she insisted.

“Well put her on the line,” he said, his voice suddenly carrying a ring of seriousness to it.

He has lost his freaking mind!

“You’re kidding right?” she asked wearily.

“Nope, put her on.” he said, the confidence resonating in his voice.

“Ok, but I am going to get to tell you I told you so,” Kaya informed him then turned her voice toward the bedroom door and yelled, “AUNT DI! You have a phone call!”

Kaya got the feeling Di was already on the other phone because she answered right away. “Hello?” she said cheerily into the phone.

“HI Mrs. Haile this is Kenny O’Connell.”

“Kenneth, oh wow hi Kenny how have you been! I have not seen you since you were what, about 11! What can I do for you? Does your dad need to talk to Jed,” she asked with a delighted and surprised façade that Kaya saw right through. She had a feeling Aunt Di knew exactly why he had called.

“Um actually no, I was wondering if I could take Kays out for ice-cream, I promise to have her back by ten,” he said earnestly.

“Does Kaya want to go,” Di asked.

“She said she wouldn’t mind I just wanted to make sure it was ok with you first” he finished.

“Well I certainly do appreciate you honoring the chain of command dear. It is a school night Kenny so you need to have her back by 9:30,” she told him.

“Will do Mrs. Haile, I’ll be there in ten minutes. I am just down the road at my friend Josh’s house.”

“Ok Kenny we’ll see you then and Kaya you might want to get ready,” Di said into the phone. At that point Kaya had to hang up the phone; that boy had more charm than a damn charm bracelet!
