The voices in her head have decided to kill her.

Most people joke about hearing voices in their heads. For Chloe Jeffries, they’re real. And as the creative force behind one of the most popular shows on television, she has used the constant flood of voices in her mind to her advantage: fuel for entertainment.

But now one of the voices has decided it wants Chloe all for itself.

Ex-Special Forces soldier Shane Westman just wants to make it back to his ranch in Wyoming to begin to heal from the horrors of war. The last thing he needs, even as a favor for a good friend, is to take on bodyguard duty of a flighty television writer. But once he does, he realizes there are threats at play he doesn’t understand. And the woman who has somehow begun to thaw his frozen heart is in desperate danger from a menace they can’t see, but is always close.

Someone determined to be the last voice Chloe ever hears.

Excerpt…

Chloe had put a week’s salary in the curse jar by the time she got off the phone with her studio a few hours later checking Shane Westman out.Westman was completely trustworthy, competent, and thorough. The studio had run a background check on him as soon as Linear Tactical had said who they were sending. The man had a stellar military record and was well-respected by everyone in the known universe and their mothers.

As if Chloe couldn’t tell all of that by the perfect creases in his khakis.

She wasn’t worried about whether he could get the job done. Any idiot could see that he’d accomplish everything he put his mind to.

She was worried about her ability to get anything done while he was around.

She’d gotten more and more upset as the studio had asked her very logical questions: had Shane done something to offend her? Or make her think he was incompetent? To worry her or someone else?

It didn’t take long for her to realize that trying to explain to the logical studio executives that Shane Westman’s presence might hamper her creative force made her just sound like a nutcase.

And she was a nutcase. But she knew having that man around was going to change everything about everything. Chloe didn’t like change. She liked the chaos she’d built around her because it was hers, and she controlled it. Having Westman around threatened that.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want everyone safe—she did; of course she did—but couldn’t they find someone a little less…commanding? Forceful? Sexy? Damn it.

Meet the author…

Winner of the Golden Quill Award for Best Romantic Suspense, and a finalist in multiple other Romance literary awards, including the coveted RITA Award by the Romance Writers of America, Janie Crouch loves to read – almost exclusively romance – and has been doing so since middle school. She cut her teeth on Harlequin (Mills & Boon) Romances when she lived in Wales, UK as a preteen, then moved on to a passion for romantic suspense as an adult.

Janie recently relocated with her husband and four children to Germany (due to her husband’s job as support for the U.S. Military), after living in Virginia for nearly 20 years. When she’s not listening to the voices in her head (and even when she is), she enjoys traveling, long-distance running, movie-watching, knitting and adventure (obstacle) racing. Janie completed an Ironman Triathlon in 2014 and is prepping for another one in 2017.

Her favorite quote: “Life is a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller.

  6. Her hearing voices sounds really interesting. I’d like to see how that works in the plot. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  7. I’m a sucker for a romantic suspense novel that has a hot military dude, a deep storyline attached and super chemistry. Hugs…

  8. Sounds interesting and I enjoyed the excerpt but suspense novels do strange things to me and I either skip to the end to find out how it all ends (and soothe the nerves) or give up when it gets too much! lol.
