This summer, I actually have a few reading projects going on. Every year, I join a summer reading program challenge with my friend and her family. They come up with a cool theme each year (this year is space and planets) and we have to read books for specific categories. It’s usually things like suspense, romance, books with certain colored covers, books set in a particular place, or books released in a specific year. For the last handful of years, I did terribly at the challenge because I was exploring Japan and finishing school. Well, I finally graduated, and it looks like we may be in for a very active typhoon season with no summer traveling. So, I should have nothing but time on my hands to read!
The other thing I have going on is that I joined and became an admin for a local romantasy book club here in Japan. So, that has been pushing me to read more books. I’ve read a lot of books that haven’t been on my radar, but that I really enjoyed. It’s kind of helped me get back into the groove of reading again.
The other bookish project I’m doing is trying to go through my Goodreads TBR. I have had books sitting on that list for over a decade, and it’s overwhelming to look at. So, I recently went through and knocked out a bunch of books that no longer interest me, and I am now going through the list, dusting off the books, and giving them a chance in the spotlight. So far…. it’s not going great. HOWEVER, I’m sure there are some winners in there.
So yeah, this summer is going to be a mix of book club reads, dusty TBR books, and my summer reading challenge.
There are a few here that I wouldn’t mind trying myself, but I really must say, it’s brilliant that you’ve become the admin of a local romantasy book club in Japan! If I ever go back to Japan (and I really hope I do!), who knows, I might pop in 😀

I’m not a big mystery thriller reader. I’m a romance reader. However, one of the categories for my summer reading challenge is mystery/thriller and this one sounded interesting.
I really love this summer reading challenge you’re doing with your friend! It sounds like a lot of fun! I’ve also been trying to read the books that have been sitting on my Goodreads to-read list for ages. It’s super overwhelming, though, to try and go through my massive list that’s over 5,000 books long. I might have to write it off as a lost cause. LOL. I hope you enjoy all your books, and that the weather is kind! I was born in Japan and heard about the earthquake that occurred not too far from where I lived. Hopefully you weren’t negatively impacted by that!

Oooof. Mine wasn’t that bad but over the years I HAVE been trying to slowly delete books that don’t sound interesting to me anymore. A few weeks ago I sat down and went through all the books, one-by-one, and if they weren’t on KU or my library, and wasn’t something I would be interested in buying to read, I gave it the boot. That dropped it down to over 100 books. Now, I am just going through and trying to read them to continue to dwindle the list. I’m at that phase in life where I get overwhelmed with too many things. Apparently my Goodreads list is one of them. Ha!
So far we have had 2 typhoons come through since June 1st, with more activity brewing out there. I’m not upset about it, though. The corral has been dying from the lack of cooler waters. So, I’m excited to get into the ocean and see it thrive again.
I’ve been out of the reading loop for quite some time, as my focus at the moment is on books about Japan (mostly non-fiction, but I have a couple of fiction books I’m really looking forward to reading), as well as dealing with some heavy personal stuff. However, the books on your TBR list look quite intriguing!

Oh no, Fran. I hope things lighten up for you. I can totally relate. I took a handful of years off from reading and blogging and am just trying to get back into the groove of things. I miss the book community and escaping in other worlds for a bit.
It’s not a book about Japan, but Bridge of Scarlet Leaves by Kristina McMorris is a historical (fiction) novel about an American that marries a Japanese immigrant right before the attack on Pearl Harbor. I read it over a decade ago and it has stuck with me ever since.
Most of these are new to me, but so many pretty covers! Love the reading challenges you’re doing, and congrats on the Romantasy book club! Looks like that is right up your alley.

I seem to constantly be tweaking my TBR, so I get it. 700ish on Goodreads seems to be the magic number, once it gets beyond that, I tend to get overwhelmed, and start deleting. Oooweeee. I’m still itchy after getting my number down to 108. It would have been lower, but I keep seeing new books, especially on everyone’s list, and I started adding books to the list again.
Looks like a good line-up! I remember really liking Red, White and Royal Blue, at least… hope you have fun! But sometimes books that have been lingering on the TBR seem to have missed their chance for me: I might’ve enjoyed them back then, but I should probably have read them then when they were speaking to me enough to grab them! Oh well.
That seems to be the case for me. I think that my head/life was in another place when I added them and my reading preference/expectations have changed since then. I’m hoping to at least still find a diamond in the rough.

Really?! My friend mailed it to me because she knew I grew up with Golden Girls and thought it would be a cute book for me to read. I figure it will be perfect for the mystery slot on my summer reading challenge. I’m not a big mystery reader, but I’m hoping my love of GG overrides everything else.

Your summer reading project sounds like a lot of fun, I love the space and planets theme! The GoodReads tbr project is also a great idea. I try to clear some away every once in a while but that’s where every book I’ve ever been interested in goes and I have made my peace that it’s going to be in the thousands forever . A Fate Inked in Blood is one I’ve been interested in and Murder by Cheesecake looks fun! Enjoy your summer reading 🙂 !
