Do you believe in love after life?

Looking for a fresh start, Peyton Clark becomes the proud owner of a piece of New Orleans history: an Antebellum-era two-story house in the Garden District. It’s going to take time and a fat wallet to restore the fixer-upper to its former glory, but after her recent divorce, Peyton could use the distraction.

It’s not long before Peyton discovers she’s moved into the haunted home of a flirtatious paranormal prankster. She’s receiving kisses from unseen lips and caresses from a ghostly hand, and soon she begins to have vivid dreams, bringing her face-to-face with the incomparably handsome ghost of Drake Montague.

When Peyton grows closer to her general contractor, Ryan Kelly—who is as charming as he is alive—the chill in the air could only suggest Drake’s jealousy from beyond the grave. But even though she’s definitely attracted to and interested in Ryan, Peyton also can’t get Drake out of her dreams, or her heart, as she begins to uncover the frightening truth behind his death a century ago…

1thoughtsI was thinking this was going to be a lot different than it was. The synopsis says “She’s receiving kisses from unseen lips and caresses from a ghostly hand, and soon she begins to have vivid dreams, bringing her face-to-face with the incomparably handsome ghost of Drake Montague.” However, I don’t remember there being any hanky panky ghost stuff going in. She hears footsteps in her house, and then later has a dream of Drake. Only it’s not a dream but a real encounter with Drake. There isn’t any romance really between the two of them other than Drake being jealous and Peyton finding him attractive.

However, with that being said, the story itself was entertaining. There’s a malevolent spirit who is trying to harm Peyton. Drake is trying to stop it but in the process, the spirit ends up draining Drake in an attempt to kill him. The whole book revolves around Peyton trying to exorcise the malevolent spirit while trying to help Drake.

This was a good story that involved ghosts. There are no vampires, or werewolves. Just good ol’ fashioned ghosts. Okay, so maybe there’s a warlock and a witch but they are in the story only to help get rid of the malevolent spirit. It’s not like they are flying all around the place on broomsticks. I liked that the author didn’t try adding too many supernatural beings into one story. She kept it simple.

With that being said, the main characters were not my favorite. Peyton seemed a bit immature for me, considering she was recently divorced. Plus, Ryan just seemed far too scripted to me. He just came off as incredibly fake. I liked the idea of the story but in the end it just wasn’t what I thought it would be. There really were no answers to what takes place in the story, just more questions. I get that this is a series but I was hoping for more.

The Ouija board scene.

“But before I could even consider putting my fingers back on the planchette, the thing pointed to number one, followed by two, then three, and so on. Trina immediately flipped the board upside down; the planchette flew across the room. We both jumped at the sound of the wood hitting the wall, but once it fell on the floor and lay still, neither of us said anything. We just sat there, staring at each other, shock registering in our eyes.”

One Thought on “Review: Ghouls Rush In by HP Mallory

  1. God, I hate it when a novel leaves me with more questions than answers, lol. Especially if I have to wait for the next one, ie it’s not out already, lol! Not real good with patience when it comes to these things, haha.
It sounds like an interesting read, but I can’t say I’d wanna dive in, the whole package (cover, blurb) doesn’t really hook me in, and from your review I can tell it wouldn’t really work out, most likely.

Loved the Ouija board scene, though 😀
