Her job is to stay hidden.
Too bad he can’t take his eyes off her.

Soldier-for-hire Ethan Hayes is the youngest member of an elite mercenary team. While he may be affectionately nicknamed the rookie, the skills Ethan honed as a Marine make him seriously dangerous. But when a sudden distress call puts him in close quarters with a rival, he finds more than his field skills being put to the test.

Juliet Mason stands out as the master thief in a covert group of assassins and spies. Her latest mission is personal—and it’s gone horribly wrong. Juliet may prefer to work alone, but when the rookie comes to her aid in snowy Eastern Europe, she can’t deny they make a good team. But even up against a powerful enemy, their most challenging task yet may be fighting the passion between them…

1thoughtsThis is a story between the rookie mercenary and the thief. These two met in the previous book when Juliet’s services were needed. Ethan and Juliet immediately got under each others skin. So, it was no surprise that they got their own book.

Juliet’s brother was shot and killed by a well known assassin. Her brother’s dying wish was to find the man who shot him and killed his girlfriend, and kill those responsible. So that’s precisely what she does. However, when she finds out who hired the assassin she bites off more than she can chew. Soon she finds herself surrounded my Jim’s men and trying to juggle two things at once. Kill the man responsible for her brother’s death, and keep the other people on his hit list alive.

I’m not going to lie, Midnight Pursuits was not my favorite from the series thus far. I don’t know why but I just didn’t fall in love with them. In fact, I was more interesting in Anastasia – a 15 year old girl that they rescue from an attempted assassination. Maybe it had to do with Juliet always calling Ethan “kid” and talking down to him. Maybe it was Ethan always talking/thinking about his erection and trying to prove to Juliet how un-kid like he is. I don’t know but this one just didn’t work for me. However, when the whole team comes on board to help out I was able to get into the story a little bit more.

So with that being said, I found myself gravitating toward a new duo of characters. Sullivan and Liam. They are attached at the hip and any time one of the girls in the books brings up their closeness, they get prickly. So, to that I have to wonder. Unfortunately for me, their book is not next. Instead it’s Jim and Noelle. The leaders of the two groups who clearly have a history from way back when that they are not over.

One thing I do want to say is that the author knows how to write suspense. When there was a water-boarding scene, I found myself holding my breath right along with the character. Between the torture scenes and the killing, she doesn’t skim over it all. She definitely knows how to leave readers on the edge of their seat.

In the end this wasn’t a horrible read but it was not my favorite. I’m honestly not looking forward to Noelle and Jim’s story. So, hopefully that means that it’s going to rock my world. Who knows. Either way there is only one way to find out. 😉

12 Thoughts on “Review: Midnight Pursuit by Elle Kennedy

  1. Aww I hope your next read is awesome!

  2. Sorry this one was a disappointment. It’s never a good thing in a book when you’re interested in any other characters but the ones you are supposed to be interested in. Too bad the next one isn’t even about the couple you wanted.

    • Sometimes I get interested in the side characters but my main focus is still on the main players. You’re right though, if my sole focus is on other people that’s not a good thing. I’m hoping the next one will surprise me.

  3. You are having a streak 🙁

I’m on a reading slump too. Hopefully we can get out of these funk, you and your mediocre reads, and my lack of interest in anything.

    • Girl, don’t I know it. I wish I has having a good streak though. I don’t know if it’s just me or the books I’m choosing. Maybe we need to reevaluate how we look at books to read. LoL Here’s to hoping it picks up for us.

  4. Aw, I liked the sound of the synopsis too! I haven’t heard of this series that I know of, but I’m glad you were able at least to get into it a bit. 🙂 Great review!

    • Thanks. A lot of people loved this book. It’s an interesting series, I will say that. I like the combination of characters that cycle through the books.

  5. Aw very sad 🙁 I loved these two. It was my first one of hers I think. Bummer when they just don’t do it for ya.

  6. Sucks not to like the main characters. Too bad the next book doesn’t have the characters you want.
