Angel Crawford is a loser.

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she’s a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who’s been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in a horrible car crash, but she doesn’t have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there’s a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it’s an offer she doesn’t dare refuse.

Before she knows it she’s dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she’s hungriest!

Angel’s going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn’t, she’s dead meat.

Literally.

My Life as a White Trash Zombie was actually a fun read. While I did have a rough time getting into it, it just seemed so boring in the beginning, but it picked up… or I just got used to the pace. I dunno. Either way, I really liked the story about a girl who’s kinda going nowhere with her life, who wakes up as a zombie one day, and has to navigate this new world she’s been thrust into. I mean, not only does she have to figure out the whole being a zombie thing, but some random person knows what’s happened to her and hooked her up with her first job. A job where she picks up corpses from the scene of death and beings them back to the morgue to be autopsied. Which is a huge plus for her since that means she gets a steady supply of brains every day while at work.

Angel’s character definitely has her flaws. She’s a high school drop out. She pops pills for fun. She is someone who would rather be high than not. And she really just doesn’t care about living her best life. I mean, she’s got a deadbeat father who is an abusive drunk. So, I mean, she doesn’t really see her life going anywhere but staying in the trailer park, popping pills to numb the world. So, when she wakes up not feeling quite right, having some mysterious person giving her a job, and randomly getting this insatiable hunger for human brains… her life gets a bit more interesting. Not only does she have to go to work, something she’s never really done before, but she finds herself enjoying her job and the people she works with. Not to mention, her job has the perks of free brains whenever a body comes in. To say that Angel didn’t have a tremendous amount of character growth would be an understatement.

Not only does the book focus around Angel learning the ins and outs of life… and well also the undead life, there’s also some crazy stuff going on. She comes across other zombies, which confirm her suspicious as to what’s going on with her. There’s also some murders going on that no one quite knows where to start with. It’s not every day numerous people show up decapitated. So, while this story started off a bit slow, once I got into the groove of things, I found myself really invested in the story. With all the revelations that popped up in this story, I can’t wait to see what’s next for Angel.

  2. I’ve read a lot of reviews for this one and for some reason this sounds like iZombie the show. I haven’t picked it up yet because of the mixed reviews I’ve read.

  3. I’ve always wanted to read this series. It looks like so much fun. It’s been on my to-read list forever. I have another super long series that I’m working on slowly (The Charley Davidson series), but I might have to tackle this one next.

  4. This sounds completely and utterly random. I’m sure that I’d absolutely detest the character of Angel but at the same time I’m 100% intrigued and will probably pick this up at some point. :-/

I’m glad it’s good enough that you want to read on!
