After serving five years in prison for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where it all went wrong, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. But the bridges Kenna burned are proving impossible to rebuild. Everyone in her daughter’s life is determined to shut Kenna out, no matter how hard she works to prove herself. The only person who hasn’t closed the door on her completely is Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and one of the few remaining links to Kenna’s daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is slowly becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would risk losing the trust of everyone important to them. The two form a connection despite the pressure surrounding them, but as their romance grows, so does the risk. Kenna must find a way to absolve the mistakes of her past in order to build a future out of hope and healing.

Reminders of Him was such an emotional read. Kenna’s spent the last 5 years in prison, grieving the loss of her boyfriend and her daughter. Now that she’s out of prison, she wishes to see her daughter. However, she needs to get past her deceased boyfriend’s parents to do so. Add onto that the fact that she has feelings for a guy who turns out to be her deceased boyfriends long time friend, and you have a whole slew of complications.

Like I said, this book was a rollercoaster. I felt bad for Kenna. She made a poor choice when she was a teenager and it cost her so much. She’s felt guilty for the death of Scotty, and even tried to end her life over her guilt. However, meeting her daughter, who she gave birth to while in prison, has been a driving factor for her. So, of course, when she attempts to make contact she’s met with hostility across the board. With that being said, the glimpses of compassion she receives from her new friends and Ledger gives her hope. It was just so sad to see her struggle so much.

I really liked that this book is written in Kenna’s and Ledger’s point of view. It allowed us to see Ledger battle his emotions over everything. He’s only known the story on how his best friend died through the court system when Kenna was imprisoned for involuntary manslaughter. So, it stands to reason that he’s held a grudge against Kenna for the last five years. However, when he gets to actually know Kenna, he realizes that she’s probably suffered the most over Scotty’s death. He tries to find a balance between supporting her, and figuring out what’s best for her daughter, Diem.

This was a very well written book that had me staying up late at night trying to finish it. If you’re looking for a story that focuses on loss, family, and forgiveness, then you need to pick up this book.

2 Thoughts on “Review: Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

  1. Sounds like one of those books that you had a hard time putting down. That sounds really good.

  2. I’ve only read a novella by Hoover and I didn’t quite know what this one was about but I see it everywhere.

I know she’s a favorite author for many readers.
