Genre: Young Adult Romance
Rating:

Layken’s father died suddenly, leaving her to gather every ounce of strength to be a pillar for her family, in order to prevent their world from falling apart. Now her life is taking another unexpected turn…

Layken’s mother gets a job which leads to an unwanted move across the country. However, a new home means new neighbours… and Layken’s new neighbour is the very attractive Will Cooper.

Will has an intriguing passion for slam poetry, and a matching passion for life. The two feel an irresistible attraction but are rocked to the core when a shocking revelation brings their romance to a screeching halt. Layken and Will must find a way to fight the forces that threaten to tear them apart…or learn to live without each other.

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book! I suppose the synopsis doesn’t really give you any of the actual meat to the story. So, I always passed it up because it didn’t sound interesting to me. However, those plot twists that the author incorporates into the story are what makes this novel so amazing! I thought this would just be a story between an 18-year-old and 21-year-old, but it’s so much more than that. Not to mention the plot twist the author throws in later in the story. All I can say is that just when you think you are comfortable with the story, the author changes things up.

Layken’s family pack up they house in Texas and move to Michigan after her father passes away. The moment they pull up, Layken’s little brother, Kel, immediately makes friends with the boy across the street. Who just so happens to be Will’s little brother. Which is how Lake and Will meet each other. I loved that Kel and Caulder were so close. They became instant best friends and were always running back and forth between the two houses. Those two are what brought the two families together. Even when times were strained, those two kids still managed to get everyone under the same roof. Plus, their honesty and lack of filter was refreshing.

I also really liked Lake’s best friend, Eddie. Eddie’s been bouncing around foster homes and has the confident aura about her because of it. She doesn’t shy away easily and approaches things head on. Even when she gets suspicious about something that could be horrific and ruin people’s lives, she keeps it to herself and doesn’t ask questions. I really liked her character and honestly don’t know if I would have enjoyed the story as much if she wasn’t in it.

I really wish I could go into details, but I don’t want to ruin the story. I didn’t see Lake and Will’s story unfolding the way that it did, I didn’t see how much things were about to change for Lake. I was blindsided at every turn. What I can say was that it was one emotional ride. I laughed, cried, swooned, and got annoyed. This is yet another great story by Colleen Hoover. With that being said, I don’t think I will continue with the series, though. I felt like the story ended perfectly.

Gah! I’m glad I’m not the only one who hangs their head after taking so long to read certain books 😉 but I’m really, really happy you loved Slammed, Kristin. It’s one of my favorites and started my love affair of all things CoHo – even if I haven’t read every single one of her books yet. 🙂 Will and Lake…sigh. And you’re so right about Kel and Caulder…and Eddie! I read This Girl relatively recently but still, your review makes me want to read Slammed again!

  2. It’s been so long since I’ve read Slammed! Even though I enjoyed it, I never read The Point of Retreat or This Girl. I haven’t read a CoHo book in a while, and I miss her addictive writing! I also loved Kel, Caulder, and Eddie! The secondary characters were done so well. 🙂

  3. I still haven’t read one of her books 🙁

  4. I loved this book too. That woman can write!

  5. I love a good plot twist.

  6. Isn’t the continuation of this series just this book from a different POV? I have never been drawn to those. Man, I remember when this book first came out. There was so much hype! I really do want to read this one now, but like you, I felt the blurb offered nothing in the way of telling us what the story was about.

    Great review! 🙂

  7. I’ve never heard of this one, but I love when there is a twist that surprises me and keeps my interest. So glad you really enjoyed this one so much! Hugs…and Happy Wednesday! RO

  8. I’ve only read a novella by Hoover. I’m kind of afraid to read her books lol
