The Crown

Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: May 3, 2016
Genre: Dystoptian Young Adult
Rating:

When Eadlyn became the first princess of Illéa to hold her own Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.

Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.

What a great way to wrap up the Selection series. We started off with America as she participated in the selection to win Prince Maxon’s heart and become Princess. Then we got to see their firstborn daughter, Eadlyn, enter her own Selection in order to distract their people for a little while. However, even though it started off as a simple way to divert everyone’s attention until they could find a way to calm their people and help regain a balance, Eadlyn soon finds herself taking it seriously. The Crown is the last book where we finally get to the end of the Selection and see who Eadlyn chooses.

I am usually not a fan of love triangles. I really hate them and it drive me nuts. However, it really worked for this book. I think it had something to do with the fact that Eadlyn wasn’t in love with all of the guys. Each one served a purpose. One was a friend who would be a comfortable companion if she chose him. Another blatantly told her that he would be her Prince Consort only in title and would gladly hide away in the castle and allow her to be a free woman. While another guy was just too stinking adorable to not gush over, but he didn’t speak her language, nor did she speak his, so their conversation was very lacking. There were obviously others in the mix but those always felt like the top contenders to me. So, the fact that she feels for all these guys, each “feeling” is completely different and didn’t make me roll my eyes or want to throw the book because I totally understood why she kept them around.

Was I happy with her choice in the end? Yes! However, if you would have asked me at the last book who I wanted, I would have chosen a completely different person. Honestly, a little part inside of me was still rooting for him but I in the end it just wasn’t meant to be and I was happy with Eadlyn’s choice.

This series has been fun to read. It’s kind of like a young adult version of The Bachelor shows except the person everyone is fighting over is royalty. I liked that the author decided to continue the series and write about their daughter going through a Selection because it showed the complete difference between the way men and women go through it. Plus, the original books followed a contestant (America) whereas this one followed the person who everyone was vying for. Like I said, it was a fun series to read. Kind of a guilty pleasure of fictional reality TV… if that makes any sense. HA!

Favorite quote…

“Maybe it’s not the first kisses that are supposed to be special. Maybe it’s the last one.”

10 Thoughts on “Review: The Crown by Kiera Cass

  1. I really should try this series one day

  2. My best friend started reading this series and now she is “pushing” me to try it ASAP because, I quote, “It’s SOOOO good!” And now here you are with a review for the last instalment . . . I gather I should really give it a go, huh? Will do 😉

  3. I have been thinking about picking these up and I like the idea that its a royal version of the “bachelor”.

  4. If it had a love triangle and didn’t make you want to shank the book then I might give this a go 😀 hehehe

  5. I don’t know if I like America or Eadlyn’s story more, but I loved how each was a different perspective! I was rooting for the guy she ended up with, but didn’t think it would actually happen! It was a pleasant surprise, but I did end up feeling bad for two other characters. I wouldn’t mind a little short story to see how they are doing! I didn’t love this series, but it sure is entertaining! It’s like I couldn’t help but watch it, which is exactly how I feel with The Bachelor and all of it’s other shows!

  6. This is the first I am hearing of this series. I can see myself enjoying this. Thanks for sharing.

  7. What a pretty cover. This sounds quite good.

  8. I still haven’t read this series yet because I don’t think it’s for me but I bet it’s fun to be able to follow the story to the next generation.

    For What It’s Worth

  9. I’ve always thought that these were too dramatic for me, but with so many loving this series I really may have to give it a try!

  10. This series has some of the PRETTIEST covers! I never got started on this series but hopefully one day I can make the time to binge the series. Great review!
