Sixteen-year-old Maya is just an ordinary teen in an ordinary town. Sure, she doesn’t know much about her background – the only thing she really has to cling to is an odd paw-print birthmark on her hip – but she never really put much thought into who her parents were or how she ended up with her adopted parents in this tiny medical-research community on Vancouver Island.

Until now.

Strange things have been happening in this claustrophobic town – from the mountain lions that have been approaching Maya to her best friend’s hidden talent for “feeling” out people and situations, to the sexy new bad boy who makes Maya feel . . . . different. Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya’s biological parents and it’s easy to suspect that this town might have more than its share of skeletons in its closet.

I had read Armstrong’s the Darkest Powers trilogy and really liked it. She has a great way of telling a story and sucking you. Even though you think you know where the story is headed, the author throws in a twist that leaves you reeling at the end.

I loved the characters in this book and the way that Maya spoke with her parents. The relationship was so open and carefree that is was pretty comical to read as Maya razzed her father. I was pretty shocked when her parents took her to get her tattoo but as you progress through the story you start to see how close of a relationship they have.

The only thing that really confused me was one character named Sam. She seemed a little bipolar and I cannot wait to see what her story is. I hope the author talks a little bit about what makes her tick.

The storyline sort of reminds me of the Darkest Powers trilogy which isn’t a bad thing since it is the second half of the Darkest Powers story. I really cannot wait until these set of characters meet up with Chloe and her friends.

Considering that Maya is so comfortable with her parents and speaks her mind, I wanted to show you the way they interact with each other. Maya is heading out with Rafe and her parents want to sit down and talk with him and feel him out. Maya sees what is happening and says…
“We have Kenjii (their German Shepherd). We have my cell phone. Since we aren’t yet officially dating, I’m sure you’ll agree that’s all the protection we need.”

4 Thoughts on “Review: The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong

  1. Great review! I am a fan of Darkest Powers. But after reading this book, It was kind of okay, though the ending left me wanting for more. But no matter what I would still read it anyway, It connects to the Darkest Powers so id definitely read anything related to that series. Im on teamChloe by the way. I cant wait for them to meet up. Maya and Chloe.

  2. I really want to read this one, I liked the first two books in the Darkest Powers but felt the last book has no real closure for the characters hopefully this new spin-off will leave some closure for them. I also keep hearing how Maya has such a great relationship with her parents as well as how great the settting of the town on Vancouver Island was, so I think I’ll be picking this up soon. Nice review! 🙂

  3. I STILL haven’t read either series and that’s a damn shame, because now I really, really want to read this one! *gets ready to head to the library*
