This soldier’s the perfect hoax…if she doesn’t fall for him first.

Stats whiz Kayla Moriarity knows her way around numbers and algorithms. Men, on the other hand, are unsolvable equations. Now Kayla’s en route to her sister’s wedding—alone and without the fictional boyfriend she invented for her family. Fortunately, her plane comes complete with complimentary cocktails and a ridiculously hot ex-marine in the seat beside her. And that’s all it takes for Kayla’s inhibitions to go sailing out the airlock…

Cooper Shillings has soft spot for people in trouble, but he certainly wasn’t expecting to land in it himself—and definitely not while getting naughty mid-air with a sexy southern belle. When he hears Kayla’s predicament, however, he offers his services as a stand-in boyfriend. After all, he’s heading overseas soon…and how could he refuse a little no-strings wickedness?

It’s the perfect plan. And all Kayla has to do is ensure her family falls for the ultimate bluff, without falling for it—and Cooper—in the process…

1thoughtsKayla has been lying to her family about having a boyfriend to keep them off her back. The know nothing about this made up man because she wants it to be a surprise when they meet him. Well, imagine her surprise when she meets a man on a plane who’s willing to play the role of her boyfriend. Only, the lines start to blur and the relationship becomes more real than the two of them ever planned.

We’ve all watched those movies with this type of theme. So it comes as no surprise that the two end up falling in love only to have drama in the last 20 minutes where one bails but in the end love prevails. This story is no different from those. However, McLauglin makes it a bit more steamier than those movies. Heck, the two get quite cozy and very personal on the plane ride, in the airport parking lot and then later at her hotel room. So, pulling off the whole, “Oh yeah, I’m totally hitting that.” vibe wasn’t hard for these two. They didn’t need to fake their chemistry because they already had it.

I did have some issues with this book though. The fact that they just meet each other and she allows him to put his hands in her nether region, while on a plane. Maybe I’m just an old stickler but for me that was just taboo. I could see maybe kissing someone at a club or something but on a plane ride? Let alone letting some stranger get his digits in my vajayjay, that’s just not happening. Although I could see taking up the opportunity to have a real life fake boyfriend and then possibly progressing after a while but right off the bat like that? Eh, not so much.

“We met in an airport, and before the plane landed, I already knew the little sounds you make when you come. Ever since, it’s been a whirlwind of craziness.”

Once I got past the initial hand shake – for lack of a better term – I was on board with the story. There were no pesky ex’s trying to reclaim Kayla’s heart. Although, Cooper’s military past makes him feel unworthy of Kayla. However, in the end all it takes is a grand gesture to get the girl of your dreams. It was a good romantic read with a bit of steam mixed in but it was just “eh” for me. It didn’t really give me anything new that I hadn’t already seen/read before. I wish the author had thrown in a twist to set it apart from all the others.

Hey, fiction lovers. I’m author Melissa Landers, and I’m thrilled to announce that my debut YA  sci-fi romance, ALIENATED, is finally available from Disney-Hyperion! Cue the dancers and  toss the confetti, because it’s been a long wait!

In a nutshell, ALIENATED is the story of valedictorian Cara Sweeney, who gets more than  she bargained for when she agrees to host the nation’s first intergalactic exchange student, the  gorgeous but emotionally-stilted Aelyx (pronounced A-licks) from planet L’eihr. The tone is  light and humorous, but I explore some deeper themes as well.

What do reviewers have to say?

She thought she’d sworn off military men for good…

Sam Kercher is every inch a wickedly hot Marine. Tall. Sexy. Lethal. When his best friends call in a favor, Sam is forced to face an entirely new line of duty—playing nanny for their newly divorced sister and her squirming seven-month-old twin boys. If Sam can dissemble an M16 in his sleep, diaper duty should be a cakewalk…right?

Unfortunately, Operation Nanny isn’t quite that simple. Sheridan has sworn off overbearing military men, so Sam must protect her from her dirtbag ex without revealing just how much he has in common with her brothers. Or that he’s been ordered not to touch her. Ever. Problem is, Sheri’s one hell of a gorgeous woman, capable of making this hard-bodied marine even harder. And Sam wants her bad.

Protect the girl. Care for the babies. Hide his identity. And keep his hands off. But even the most disciplined Marine has weaknesses…and Sheridan is one Sam might not be able to resist.

1thoughtsI don’t normally read romances with children in it. Let’s be honest, it can be a little awkward and distracting when there’s thoughts of hard-ons one minute and children joyfully laughing in the next. So I went into this one with some reservation about there not only being one kid in the mix but two. However, the author did an amazing job incorporating the infants into the story that didn’t make it awkward at all.

There was quite a bit of humor in the story. Right in the beginning you have Sheriden and her friend Kelli hanging out in the kitchen unwinding. Kelli is exactly like me. I have four children, all of which are covered in fur and have four legs. I never received the “mommy gene”. The puking, crying, pooping just sounds like a nightmare. However, scooping crap out of a box and cleaning up regurgitated furballs doesn’t faze me. Yup, Kelli and I are two peas in a pod.

“I love you, Sher. And I’ll gladly hold you hair back if you need to puke in a bathroom toilet on girls’ night. But there’s no way I’m helping you wash diapers.”

The story is written in both Seriden and Sam’s POV. Even if there weren’t a break in between the two, you could clearly tell them apart. Sheriden is worried about not being a good mother while weighing the ramifications of jumping her “manny”. Meanwhile, Sam is reciting Marine jargon and rehashing what to do in combat situations when changing the boys’ diapers. The author did a great job in creating the characters personalities and letting them shine through the pages.

I’d have wished that the author had taken some chances with this story. Right from the synopsis you know how the story ends. Heck, I pretty much knew everything that was going to happen before finishing the first chapter. I won’t go into detail because maybe some of you may be surprised. However, I found this to be a light romantic read that doesn’t make you think to much. I think the only time I really thought about something was when I tried to picture Sheriden beating her ex-husband over the head with a peacock beanie baby.

Like I said, this is a nice light romantic read. Predictable, yes, but still enjoyable. Maybe I’d enjoy Kelli’s story more since I really seemed to gravitate to her personality a lot more. I mean seriously, the chick could be my twin.

1favequote“Please. I spent three years married to Captain Insensitive. At this point you could tell me to go fuck myself and I’d feel giddy someone’s talking dirty to me.”

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

1thoughtsCara’s been selected to be one of the few chosen from the world to take part in the first ever L’eihr exchange program. A L’eihr (alien) will come down to earth and shadow a human, enroll in their school and learn their ways. When the time is up the roles will be reversed and the human will go to L’eihr and do the same. You can guess that the humans don’t take to kindly to the aliens coming to earth. It doesn’t take long until Cara’s receiving threats. Little does she know that the panic over the L’eihr’s being on earth may have some warrant.

This was a light sci-fi romance. The author does a great job creating a story and keeping the reader entranced from the start. I will admit that I had been in a book slump until I read Alienated. I was starting to think it was just me, but this book immediately lifted my mood. Sure the story was a teensy bit predictable. However, the author still managed to throw in some curve balls throughout the story that I didn’t see coming.

She also took the time to explain the difference between L’eihr’s and humans. For instance, L’eihr’s don’t really feel emotions. They don’t do physical contact and they don’t celebrate birthdays. There was a pretty big cultural difference for Aelyx when he arrived on earth. The author did a great job not over playing it but rather letting it just blend into the story.

I liked that Landers took the time to explain the L’eihr presence as well as why the L’eihr and humans have the same DNA and look the same. I’ll be honest, up until that point I was a little miffed that the L’eihr were pretty much human with nothing to really set them apart from humans. I’m not saying throw in a 3rd eye or anything but I wanted something. However, rest assured that the author thought about this and gave an explanation to the similarities.

I also like that she showed neither species being the enemy. Each side had their good points and bad points. You had Cara’s family who embraced Aelyx as if he were their own, while others were picketing outside their yard. Meanwhile, Aelyx’s friend/fellow exchange buddy was hell bent on causing damage to earth so that the peace treaty among the two planets would cease. So there were faults on both sides as well as those willing to make it work.

My only complaint was that there was no indication that the story was jumping forward in time. One minute Cara would be sitting in the kitchen eating cereal and the next thing you know she’s outside looking at a dragonfly. It also did this when changing POV’s between Aelyx and Cara. This really messed with me since I would have to get my bearings in the middle of reading. However, I did read an ARC copy and therefor this issue may have been resolved before being published.

This is an amazing debut novel and I cannot wait to see what happens next in the storyline. It’s a great story for YA, romance, sci-fi lovers alike.

1favequote“One by one, she greeted each leader, letting her fingers linger far, far too long, not understanding that she’d given them the human equivalent of an intimate embrace instead of a handshake. When she touched the young male, his lips twitched in an amused grin before he regained his mask of cool superiority.”

Excerpt
I stood in the hardware section looking at flashlights, when I suddenly felt someone staring at me. I tried to remain inconspicuous as I glanced to my left without turning my head. At the end of the aisle stood a slender, young man at least six feet tall, wearing a red and black plaid, flannel shirt with cut-off sleeves. Lean muscles flexed on his bicep as he grabbed something off the shelf. His bare arms revealed a tattoo on his right shoulder, but I wasn’t close enough to read it.

He must’ve felt my gaze on him, because he looked over at me. The sun gently kissed his skin with a golden tan, and his full lips spread into a charming grin. He had a clean-shaven, square jaw and sharp cheekbones that would make any woman envious. His sandy blonde hair flowed like waves and curled softly on the ends, brushing his ears and collar. A few, untamed strands fell in his eyes, making his hair appear disheveled. There was no doubt in my mind he was handsome.

Immediately, a heat wave crashed beneath my skin…and I knew it wasn’t due to the summer weather. I blushed under his steady gaze and looked away in an attempt to ignore him. For some reason, I couldn’t control myself. My gaze kept finding his. A smirk played on his lips—the color of a summer peach—and I wondered if they tasted as sweet.

Excerpt
“When you said you could only give me one night…”

Just the mention of having her at all had him getting hard in his jeans. “Yeah?”

“Well, we didn’t really get that. So I thought maybe tonight you could, I don’t know…stay?”

His hand on the doorknob tightened. Pressing the metal into his palm until it hurt was the only thing keeping him sane while she nervously asked him for something that both excited and scared her.

“You sure, kitten?”

She swallowed hard and nodded. Holding her gaze, he closed the door, flipped the locks, and secured the chain before slowly walking to her. His hands moved to her small waist as he stepped in close. Her hands slid up his arms and stopped at his elbows as though she wasn’t sure she should hold him any closer. He hated there was any space between them, but he’d allow her her baby steps if that’s what she needed to feel safe.

Ever so gently, he kissed her lips. She didn’t shy away, but met him with a quiet intensity of her own.

He let her set the pace and take the lead. He didn’t want to take things further until he was sure she was ready. They came together again and again, sometimes pressing firmly as they breathed each other in.

Sometimes touching with no more than a whisper as they teased themselves with the promise of more.

It was that “more” that had Aiden’s cock straining for release and his brain fighting it back to wait until she made the first move. Then again, maybe she wasn’t as ready as she’d thought.

Pulling back, he cupped her face with his hands to still her. “I don’t want you to think we have to do anything you don’t want. Sex is not a condition of my staying the night. I can just hold you and be perfectly happy with that.”

“I’m not hesitating because I don’t want to be with you. I know you’ll stop if I tell you.” She lowered her gaze and a slight flush colored her cheeks as she whispered, “I’ve never had that before.”

A silent rage washed through him. “Look at me.” He waited the extra second it took her to obey before speaking again. “No man should ever push you for more than you can give. You have a goodness inside of you, Kat. And that goodness recognizes itself in others. So you listen to that. Trust it. And don’t go near anybody that doesn’t have what you got. You understand?”

She nodded. Tears welled in her eyes, but she blinked them back before they fell. He thanked God for small favors with that. She was already breaking his heart; he didn’t think he could handle her tears, too.

“So tell me what you want, sweetheart.”

“I want my night with you, but—” She took a deep breath and pleaded with her light blue eyes. “Can you lead, but do the going slow thing?”

Aiden wanted to wrap her up in his arms and hold her close forever so no one could ever put that look in her eyes again. The people who wronged her when she was young should be bound and tortured. Maybe someday he’d do some hunting, but his only concern now was to give her what she wanted—what they
both wanted—and show her how good he could make it for her.

“Ah, Kitten, I can do more than that.” Picking up the end of her braid, he slid the elastic from it and began to unweave her hair. “I wanna make you feel things you never thought possible.” He brushed the golden-red waves behind her shoulders and sank his fingers through them at her nape. “I wanna give you nothing but good things to remember from now on. So the past can never touch you again.”

And with that promise, he kissed her.

Aiden entered her mouth and stroked her tongue with his, guiding her in the erotic dance. Not fast or forceful, but slow and deliberate. He took his time with each step before progressing to the next. He wanted her to feel every moment, every connection their bodies made.

They broke apart, their breaths sawing in and out. With every exhale, a measure of tension left her body even as her pulse raced beneath his thumbs. Blue eyes bright with desire caged him. Swollen, cherry lips tempted him. He breathed her in, then went back for more.

Jack is now fighting to save his relationship with Keri Ann, even as his crazy life threatens to tear them apart. Again. The question is, can he convince her she can have it all? And have him? Forever?

ExcerptJack wasn’t wearing his ball cap, and the breeze ruffled his darker, longer hair.

It seemed laughable now, that I would have waited until tomorrow morning to find out what he was doing back here. I cocked my head. “You realize this qualifies as seriously creepy.”

I thought I saw his mouth lift slightly on one side.

“I couldn’t sleep and thought walking would help. And well, I ended up here.” Jack shrugged, his hands still wedged in his jeans. His soft, deep voice that I knew so well, that the world knew so well, was a smooth melody over the jagged rasping of the cicadas. “I didn’t know you’d be awake.”

You just showed back up in my life, how could I be sleeping? I bit down, holding my teeth together to keep from inviting him in.

“Why couldn’t you sleep?” I asked eventually. “Why couldn’t you?” he returned.

My skin got warm. “I was sleeping.”

Barely.

I imagined I saw his eyes narrow. “But Jazz texted and woke me,” I added. Not technically a lie.

Jack nodded, pursing his lips and rocked back on his heels. I could see more details now that my eyes were accustomed to the night and the clouds continued clearing the sky. He was wearing dark jeans and a snug dark t-shirt. His eyes hadn’t left me. I reached up and smoothed my hair, tucking an errant strand back in the direction of my messy braid, wondering what on earth I looked like after tossing and turning for the last few hours.

“Stop.”

I paused.

“You’re beautiful.”

My blood pressure rose. I clamped my jaw tight again. My upbringing dictated I thank him, but a wave of anger, no … make that pure and utter pissed-
off-ness, almost choked me. “You can’t even see me,” I snorted. “Nice try. What do you want anyway?”

“I don’t need to see you to know you’re beautiful.”

Well, didn’t that knock an oyster out of its shell? What was he playing at? “Seriously, what do you want, Jack? You need someone to buy your groceries or something?” My acidic tone left no doubt about how I felt.

His shoulders moved almost imperceptibly, and I had the thought he’d either let out a long sigh or he was at a loss as to what to say, and was about to give up and turn around. “Can I come in?” he asked so quietly, I almost didn’t hear him. “I’d like to talk to you.”

Sculpt is an illegal fighter.

He’s also the lead singer of a local rock band.

No one knows his real name.

And from the moment I met him, he made me forget mine.

In order to convince Sculpt to give me self-defense lessons, I had to follow his one rule—no complaining or he’d walk. I didn’t think it would be a problem. I could handle a few bruises. What I hadn’t anticipated was landing on my back with Sculpt on top of me and my entire body burning up for him.

I tried to ignore it.

I failed of course. And having a hot, tattooed badass on top of me week after week, acting completely immune to what he was doing to my body—it was frustrating as hell, so I broke his rule—I complained.

Then he kissed me.
